is cucumber good for liver - #24236
I am having this weird feeling lately, my digestion feels off and I’ve been looking for something to help my liver. I've read that cucumber is good for liver health, but I’m not really sure if that’s true?? Like I eat salads all the time, but I don’t know if it’s the cucumbers being beneficial or just the overall veggies. Couple weeks ago, I went for my annual check-up and they mentioned my liver enzymes were a bit elevated, which really freaked me out. My doctor said I should focus on my diet and suggested more fruits and veggies. Since I heard cucumber is good for liver, I’ve been trying to sneak them in everywhere! Is cucumber good for liver or am I just getting my hopes up for nothing? I’ve been slicing them into water, trying to stay hydrated, but I wonder if I’m doing this right?? And like, how much should I eat? Do I need to cut back on anything specific on my diet too? I’m honestly a bit overwhelmed with all the information out there! Can anyone clear this up for me?

Doctors' responses
Cucumbers, while not directly targeting the liver, can be part of a liver-friendly diet. They have a high water content, keeping you hydrated, and their mild diuretic property can support the body’s detoxification processes, including the liver’s. However, when considering liver health, it’s more about the cumulative effect of your overall diet rather than any single food. Your doctor’s advice to incorporate more fruits and vegetables is sound. A balanced diet rich in various fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins supports liver function. Additionally, consider reducing intake of processed foods, alcohol, and high-fat diets as these can further elevate liver enzymes. Cucumbers in salads or water can be beneficial as part of a gasternal health-focused approach. Aim for at least five portions of fruits and veggies per day, including a variety of colors and types to ensure you’re getting a range of nutrients. There’s no need to specifically consume large amounts of cucumbers - it’s about balance. Rest assured that your inclusion of cucumbers in your diet is not misplaced, but be sure it’s part of a wider strategy of diverse healthy eating. If your liver enzymes remain elevated, or you notice symptoms like jaundice, fatigue, or swelling, follow up with your doctor promptly. Always ensure you take on any necessary lifestyle changes aligned with medical guidance for optimizing liver function and overall well-being. Prioritize following your doctor’s advice and schedule regular follow-ups to monitor your liver health.
