which time is best to drink beetroot juice - #24283

Vihaan

I am really confused about this beetroot juice thing. I've heard all kinds of stories from friends and family about the health benefits, but I'm stuck trying to figure out which time is best to drink beetroot juice. Last week, I started juicing because my doctor told me my blood pressure was slightly high, and beetroot is supposed to be great for that, right? I usually have it in the morning since that's when I think it'd be good to start my day healthy, but then I read online that drinking it before workouts could enhance performance. I went for a run yesterday after drinking it and felt really energized, but also worried I might be overdoing it? Like, is it one of those things where too much of a good thing could backfire? I used to drink like a glass of it before bed thinking it’d be helpful for sleep because of the nutrients. But oh man, it was a mistake! I was up all night racing to the bathroom! Anyway, I'm just trying to figure out when is the best time to drink beetroot juice so I get the most out of it without, you know, any weird side effects. Any thoughts on what the best timing for beetroot juice really is? Would love to know if I should switch things up!

Doctors' responses

Drinking beetroot juice can indeed have several health benefits, particularly for managing blood pressure and potentially enhancing physical performance. Timing can play a role in maximizing these benefits. For blood pressure management, studies suggest that drinking beetroot juice in the morning can be quite effective. It’s thought that the nitrate content helps to dilate blood vessels, leading to lower blood pressure, and this effect can last for several hours. So, starting your day with it makes sense. However, if your primary goal is to enhance exercise performance, consuming beetroot juice 2 to 3 hours before your workout can offer a significant boost. The nitrates take some time to convert into nitric oxide, which enhances oxygen delivery to muscles, improving endurance. Regarding drinking it before bed, as you’ve experienced, it might not be ideal because of its diuretic effect, which can lead to interrupted sleep due to frequent trips to the bathroom. Moderation is key here. Drinking about 250ml to 500ml a day should be sufficient for most benefits without overdoing it. It’s also important to be mindful of sugar content if you’re buying commercially prepared juice. If you’re managing other health conditions, like kidney stones or have a history of them, check with your healthcare provider due to the oxalate content in beets. Keep hydrated and pair it with a balanced diet to optimize its effects safely.
