can yoga help in weight loss - #22475

Advait

I am really confused about something, and maybe someone here can help. Lately, I’ve been trying to shed some extra pounds, you know? I have tried running, dieting, and honestly nothing seemed to work like it should! My friend suggested yoga, but I'm not sure if I believe that can yoga help in weight loss? I mean, I always thought yoga was just about stretching and relaxation, right? But then she showed me this super intense yoga class online, and people were sweating buckets, going crazy with these poses. I’ve gone to a few classes, and while I love the calmness it brings, I still wonder does yoga actually burn calories? Like, can yoga help in weight loss enough to make a real difference? I’ve read some articles suggesting it can, but mostly they just talk about all the mental benefits and not much about actual pounds dropping, ya know? And do I have to combine it with something else like strength training or cardio, or can yoga help in weight loss on its own? Would love to hear if anyone has seen actual results from just yoga or if I should keep running too. Thank you!

Yoga can indeed contribute to weight loss, although it may not be as rapid or intense in calorie burning as traditional cardio or strength training exercises. However, it’s far from just simple stretching. Certain styles of yoga, particularly Vinyasa or Power Yoga, are more dynamic and can elevate your heart rate, leading to a higher calorie expenditure. They combine continuous movements and flow from pose to pose, which can contribute significantly to burning calories during a session. Compared to traditional forms like Hatha or gentle yoga, which focus more on relaxation and slow stretching, these intense practices can mimic the effects of aerobic exercise in terms of improving cardiovascular fitness. Additionally, yoga encourages awareness of both physical and mental states, which might help you make more mindful food choices, reduce stress-related eating, and improve sleep—all factors that can contribute to weight management. To optimize weight loss, combining yoga with other types of physical activity, like strength training or cardio, could provide a more comprehensive approach to your fitness regime. A balanced combination ensures you cover all aspects of fitness including flexibility, strength, and endurance, aiding in sustained weight loss while supporting overall health. Complementing your practice with a well-rounded diet and adequate sleep will enhance results, allowing for greater flexibility and weight loss over time. Alternatively, if you’re committed to yoga as your primary form of exercise, aim for regular sessions of the more vigorous varieties, and maintain an active lifestyle outside of your practice. Always listen to your body and consult with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your exercise routine, especially if there are underlying health concerns.
