how many calories in 100g chana - #24142

Yuvan

I am really curious about something! I’ve been trying to eat healthier and I often find myself munching on snacks like chana. The thing is, I’m not sure how many calories in 100g chana actually is. Last week, I made this awesome chana salad with some veggies and spices, thought it was a pretty nutritious choice, but when I looked up the calories in 100g chana, I found such varying info. Some places say it's around 164, while others mention lower numbers. Like, is it really that much, and does it change depending on how it's cooked or prepared? I mean, if I throw in some dressing or other ingredients, that’s gotta add more, right? Also, I noticed I feel full after eating it even though I’m not counting every calorie, but since I’m trying to be more mindful, I wanna get it right! Anyone have solid info on how many calories in 100g chana? And does anyone else snack on it like I do? Just trying to figure out if it should be a staple or if I should watch it a bit more. Thanks, guys!

Doctors' responses

The calorie count for 100g of chana, which is also commonly referred to as chickpeas, typically stands at around 164 calories when boiled. It’s worth noting that the calorie content can indeed vary depending on the form they’re consumed—like raw, canned, or roasted—and any additional ingredients that might be incorporated during preparation. For instance, if you’re adding dressings, oils, or other calorie-dense ingredients into your salad, it’s likely to increase the overall calorie count. While you’re right to point out that getting an accurate tally is tricky, the boiled chickpeas themselves maintain a relatively consistent count. Since you’ve noted feeling full after consuming them, that’s quite typical as chickpeas are high in fiber and protein, which contribute greatly to satiety. If you’re including them as part of a balanced diet and feel satisfied without counting every single calorie, they can certainly be a healthy staple. However, when watching caloric intake, it’s beneficial to track what else goes into your chana salad. Just be mindful of portions and added fats from dressings or toppings. That way, you can continue enjoying their nutritional benefits without exceeding your dietary requirements.
