Is it safe for a 15-year-old to take creatine monohydrate for gym performance? - #29733

Client_a13fb7

I am a 15-year-old boy. I want to start taking 3-5g of creatine monohydrate daily for gym performance. I plan to drink 3L of water every day and have a high-protein diet. Is this safe for my kidneys at this age, or should I wait until I am 18?

Dr. Bharat Joshi
I’m a periodontist and academician with a strong clinical and teaching background. Over the last 4 years and 8 months, I’ve been actively involved in dental education, guiding students at multiple levels including dental hygienist, BDS, and MDS programs. Currently, I serve as a Reader at MMCDSR in Ambala, Haryana—a role that allows me to merge my academic passion with hands-on experience. Clinically, I’ve been practicing dentistry for the past 12 years. From routine procedures like scaling and root planing to more advanced cases involving grafts, biopsies, and implant surgeries. Honestly, I still find joy in doing a simple RCT when it’s needed. It’s not just about the procedure but making sure the patient feels comfortable and safe. Academically, I have 26 research publications to my credit. I’m on the editorial boards of the Archives of Dental Research and Journal of Dental Research and Oral Health, and I’ve spent a lot of time reviewing manuscripts—from case reports to meta-analyses and even book reviews. I was honored to receive the “Best Editor” award by Innovative Publications, and Athena Publications recognized me as an “excellent reviewer,” which honestly came as a bit of a surprise! In 2025, I had the opportunity to present a guest lecture in Italy on traumatic oral lesions. Sharing my work and learning from peers globally has been incredibly fulfilling. Outside academics and clinics, I’ve also worked in the pharmaceutical sector as a Drug Safety Associate for about 3 years, focusing on pharmacovigilance. That role really sharpened my attention to detail and deepened my understanding of drug interactions and adverse effects. My goal is to keep learning, and give every patient and student my absolute best.

When considering supplements like creatine monohydrate, it’s important to weigh both potential benefits and risks, especially for someone your age. Creatine is widely used and generally considered safe for adults, but for teenagers, the safety profile isn’t quite as clear. Your kidneys play a crucial role in excreting creatine and its byproducts, so any supplement that impacts this system warrants consideration, especially if taken over prolonged periods. At 15, your body is still developing, and introducing supplements could impact not just your kidneys, but other aspects of growth and health. While creatine might indeed enhance your gym performance by improving muscle strength and exercise recovery, it’s also vital to ensure that it’s appropriate for your specific context. There’s emerging evidence suggesting increased benefits from protein synthesis and muscle function, yet the developmental stage should be a part of the decision-making process. Staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet are crucial factors, but they may not entirely mitigate the potential long-term effects of creatine supplementation on an adolescent body. Before starting any supplement, it’s strongly recommended to consult a healthcare provider or a sports nutritionist who can offer personalized advice based on your health profile, goals, and any pre-existing conditions. Monitoring by a healthcare professional will help ensure the supplement is taken safely and efficiently if deemed appropriate. It’s also worth considering that while creatine is popular, maximizing nutrition and training techniques can also yield significant performance improvements without introducing supplements at this stage.
