does yoga help to lose weight - #24480

Drishti

I am really curious about whether yoga helps to lose weight. A few months ago, I decided to give yoga a try since I’ve struggled with my weight and didn’t want to go to the gym. I thought, maybe, doing something like yoga could be easier and more enjoyable for me? I found this local class and honestly, I've been loving it! The thing is, after about 6 weeks of attending classes regularly, I felt like my flexibility improved and I felt stronger, but I honestly haven't seen much change on the scale. I mean, I get that yoga isn’t like running or weight lifting, but I was kinda hoping for at least a little weight loss, right? Does yoga help to lose weight for real? Or am I just wasting my time here thinking that all these stretching and poses would really make a dent? Sometimes, I even feel like maybe I’m just more hungry after my classes, like burning calories from just doing yoga makes me crave snacks more. Is that common? Also, my friend said yoga is great for mindfulness, which is cool, but I wanna know does yoga help to lose weight too? Any thoughts or personal stories would be super helpful! I just want to make sure I’m not missing out on something important while trying to get healthier.

Yoga can indeed contribute to weight loss, although not always in the way one might expect. While it might not burn calories as intensely as cardiovascular exercises, yoga can help with weight management through several mechanisms. First off, practicing yoga regularly can improve your mindfulness and awareness, which might lead to better food choices and portion control. You mentioned feeling more hungry after classes. It’s possible yoga is tuning your body in such a way that you’re more aware of hunger cues, but ensuring a balanced diet is important to avoid snacking on high-calorie foods without undermining your objectives. Also, yoga builds strength and muscle tone. With increased muscle mass, your resting metabolism might boost a bit, which could indirectly facilitate weight loss over time.

Additionally, certain types of yoga, like Vinyasa or Power yoga, can be more aerobic and calorie-burning than gentler forms. If weight loss is a primary goal, you might complement your routine with a few sessions of these forms. It does not mean gentler forms like Hatha yoga aren’t beneficial—they play a crucial role in stress reduction, which can impact weight gain by lowering cortisol levels. Many people tend to neglect the psychological aspects of weight management. Prevention of stress-induced eating might be a subtle, but important, part of your effort.

To enhance weight loss outcomes, combining yoga with other cardio exercises, and paying attention to dietary intake, focusing on nutrition rather than just calorie counting, might be crucial steps. Monitor hydration and integrate a variety of foods that keep you full without excess calories. Yoga might not show drastic changes on the scale quickly, but as part of a broader healthy lifestyle, it can certainly support weight loss. If you are not seeing the progress you’d expect, consider consulting with a professional such as a nutritionist who can offer tailored advice on diet, or a personal trainer for complementary exercise regimes.
