sugar cane is heat or cold - #24988

Kiaan

I am trying to figure out if sugar cane is heat or cold because I’ve recently started incorporating it into my diet. The other day, I had this amazing sugar cane juice from a street vendor and it was soooo refreshing on a hot day! But then I started to wonder, like, is sugar cane considered heat or cold in terms of its properties? My friend said it’s generally cooling, which makes sense because of how good it tasted when I was feeling all sweaty and sticky. But then I thought, considering how sweet it is, does that mean it could have some heating effects too? Also, I've been feeling a bit weird after drinking it—I got a little uneasy stomach. Is that normal? I read somewhere that some foods can affect people differently based on their body type and stuff. I really don’t want to end up with an upset stomach over something yummy! Should sugar cane juice be consumed in moderation or can I drink it every day? Just trying to sort out if sugar cane is heat or cold for, you know, my health decisions. Any insights would really help!

Doctors' responses

Sugar cane, in terms of traditional views on “heat” and “cold” foods, is generally considered to have cooling properties, which might explain why it felt refreshing to you on a hot day. However, it’s important to note that these ideas don’t have a scientific basis and can vary across cultures and personal experience. So, while one person might find sugar cane cooling, another might not feel quite the same. The sweetness of sugar cane mainly comes from natural sugars, which don’t inherently create a “heating” effect, although large quantities can lead to a temporary energy spike. As for the uneasy stomach you experienced, sugar cane juice is high in sucrose, which might lead to digestive concerns in sensitive individuals, or if consumed excessively. It’s also worth considering where and how the juice was prepared; vendors might not always have the most hygienic practices, potentially causing stomach discomfort. In general, it’s a good idea to consume sugar cane juice in moderation, particularly if you’re noticing discomfort afterwards. Everyone’s tolerance can differ, so if you’re keen on enjoying this treat more regularly, maybe start with smaller portions and see how your body reacts. If symptoms persist, it might be wise to avoid or at least consult a healthcare professional to ensure there’s no underlying issue. For day-to-day consumption, balancing with a diet rich in diverse nutrients should help maintain your digestive comfort and overall health.
