sabja seeds is heat or cold - #24992

Simran

I am really confused about sabja seeds and whether sabja seeds is heat or cold for the body. A couple of weeks ago, I started adding sabja seeds to my smoothies for their health benefits, like digestion and hydration. But then I heard someone say that sabja seeds is heat or cold, and honestly, it’s thrown me off. My friend swears by them for cooling effects, especially in summer, and I noticed I feel different when I have them. One day I had a spoonful in a lemonade and it felt refreshing, but then last night I had them in a pudding and felt a bit warm, you know? I'm not sure if I should be having sabja seeds regularly or if I should hold off because of that whole heat or cold thing. I also read this article that said sabja seeds can be warming for some people, and then my other friend mentioned something about balance. What should I do? Are sabja seeds considered heat or cold for everyone, or does it depend on the person? Could there be any side effects? I just wanna understand this better before making them a regular thing in my diet.

Doctors' responses

Sabja seeds, famously known as basil seeds, are traditionally viewed as having a cooling effect on the body. They are often consumed to help reduce body heat and promote hydration, especially during hot weather. The reason you might feel cooler consuming them in lemonade is because when soaked in water, the seeds swell and develop a gelatinous texture, this process is key to their cooling potential. The balance you mentioned could relate to the concept of individual body constitution, which varies from person to person. In traditional Ayurvedic and other Eastern medicine systems, people can have differing bodily responses to foods, so some individuals might perceive them differently. However, from a modern nutritional standpoint, when integrated into a generally balanced diet, sabja seeds are usually considered safe for most people, offering benefits like improved digestion, potential reduction in blood sugar levels, and a good source of fiber. If you experienced warmth after having them in pudding, it could be due to other ingredients used, such as sweeteners or dairy that may affect digestion. There aren’t significant side effects for most people unless taken in very large quantities, where excessive fiber could cause digestive issues like bloating or discomfort. For most, adding them in moderation to your diet won’t cause issues and can be beneficial, but if you notice any consistent unusual reactions, it might be worth discussing it with a healthcare provider to understand your specific constitution and potential interactions with any other conditions or treatments.
