what are the side effects of gabapentin

Veer

I am in a bit of a bind here and really need some insight. I started taking gabapentin a few weeks ago for nerve pain after a car accident, and while it seemed to help at first, I’ve started noticing some weird things happening. At first, my doctor said gabapentin was supposed to be safe, and honestly, I was relieved. But now, I'm feeling really foggy and kinda dizzy a lot. I mean it’s like I'm in a haze all the time. Plus, it’s affecting my sleep – I can’t seem to stay asleep and wake up feeling like a zombie! I read somwhere that these could be side effects of gabapentin? I'm also experiencing some tingling in my fingers, which is super annoying and confusing since it’s for nerve pain, right? I just wish I’d been warned about what are the side effects of gabapentin before starting. A friend mentioned she heard there's more to it than just the basics, but I don’t really know where to get details. Like, do people actually get all these side effects? Is this normal? Should I be worried or maybe rethink this medication? Help!

Doctors' responses

Gabapentin is commonly prescribed for nerve pain, and while it’s generally considered safe, it does have some potential side effects, which can vary widely among different people. What you’re experiencing, like feeling foggy, dizzy, and having sleep disturbances such as trouble staying asleep, are indeed known side effects. In fact, dizziness and sleepiness are fairly common. Tingling sensations, although surprising, could also be related, especially since your system is adjusting to the medication. Typically, it can take a little time for your body to adapt, and minor side effects often diminish. However, it’s important to monitor these symptoms, especially if they worsen or don’t go away. There are also less common side effects to be aware of, like mood changes, coordination problems, or swelling in the extremities. If you notice any severe side effects or anything that seriously impacts your daily functioning, it’s crucial to discuss this with your doctor. They might reevaluate your dosage or even try a different medication. Never stop taking gabapentin abruptly without your doctor’s guidance, as it may lead to withdrawal symptoms or worsen your symptoms. Alongside consulting your doctor, managing your lifestyle by ensuring consistent sleep patterns, avoiding alcohol, and monitoring how you feel in response to different activities can be helpful in minimizing side effects. Regularly reviewing your medication regimen together with your healthcare provider, especially after new symptoms appear, is a good practice.
