i'm pregnant and have a sore throat what can i take

Shivam

I am really stressed right now. I’m pregnant and have a sore throat that just won’t go away! It all started a few days ago when I felt like I swallowed something rough but then it just turned into this annoying sore throat. I tried drinking warm teas with honey but that’s only helped a little. I’ve been waiting to see if it just goes away but nope! Every morning I wake up and it feels the same or worse. I can’t take any meds that would usually help me out! My doctor said ibuprofen is a no-no during pregnancy, which I kinda expected, but I really don’t know what I’m suppose to do here. I’m worried that being sick might affect the baby and I’ve read so many conflicting things online. I’m trying to avoid anything that could harm the baby like, I don’t know, maybe some strong throat lozenges I see at the pharmacy. They all have crazy ingredients! So, I guess my question is, I’m pregnant and have a sore throat, what can I take?? Can anyone suggest anything safe? What works for them? Thanks in advance! I just want to feel better and not worry all the time!

Doctors' responses

For managing a sore throat during pregnancy, it’s important to focus on options that are both effective and safe for both you and your baby. Given that ibuprofen and some other common medications are not recommended for pregnant women, there are a few alternative approaches you can try. First, over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen (Tylenol) can be used safely during pregnancy to relieve pain, including sore throats. Be sure to follow the dosing instructions on the package. Saltwater gargles can also offer some relief—simply mix about half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and gargle several times a day. This can help reduce swelling and discomfort. Additionally, keeping your throat moist and reducing irritation is crucial, so continue with warm teas and honey, as they can offer some soothing benefits.

You might also try using a humidifier in your room, especially if the air is dry; this can help ease the irritation in your throat. When it comes to throat lozenges, look for those that are mainly sugar-based or herbal, but consult with your healthcare provider before using any medicinal lozenges, as some contain active ingredients that may not be advisable during pregnancy. It’s important to stay hydrated, so drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. If your sore throat persists, is accompanied by other symptoms such as high fever, or you notice white patches in your throat, it’s advisable to consult your doctor as these might indicate an infection that requires more specific treatment. Being proactive in managing your symptoms while ensuring safety during your pregnancy is key, and always check with your healthcare provider if you’re unsure about any treatment or remedy.
