side effects of eating curd during periods

Arnav

I am really concerned about something I've been experiencing lately. Every month during my periods, I tend to eat a lot of curd because I think it's good for digestion and all that, but lately, I’ve been feeling kinda weird. The thing is, I’ve heard mixed opinions about the side effects of eating curd during periods. Some of my friends say it's fine, while others insist it can cause bloating or cramps. I mean, I usually enjoy it, but last month I noticed I felt more crampy after having curd, which just made me wonder if it was the curd, right? It might sound silly, but I really love yogurt and I don’t wanna give it up if it’s not hurting me! Also, I’ve read some articles saying that dairy can worsen inflammation or something during periods? Like, is that a real thing? I tried to look up the side effects of eating curd during periods but found so much conflicting info that I got confused. Anyone here had these issues after eating curd during their cycle or know if it’s just in my head? I guess I just want to enjoy my curd without worrying it’ll mess up my monthlies more than they already are!

Doctors' responses

Eating curd during your periods generally isn’t seen as harmful, and many people consume it without any issues. It’s rich in probiotics, which can indeed aid digestion. However, individual reactions vary, and some might experience discomfort like bloating or cramps. This could be due to lactose intolerance or a sensitivity to dairy, which might be more noticeable during periods when some people experience more digestive sensitivity overall. Inflammation related to dairy consumption isn’t firmly established; some suggest it could be a factor, but evidence is mixed. If you suspect curd is affecting your period symptoms, try a brief elimination test—skip curd for one cycle and note any changes in cramps or bloating. If symptoms improve, consider limiting dairy or trying lactose-free options. Keep a food diary to track how various foods affect you over your cycle, and identify any patterns. Remember, period symptoms are often multi-faceted—hydration, stress, and hormones all play roles. Continue managing lifestyle factors, like sufficient hydration, regular exercise, and balanced diet to support menstrual health. If severe discomfort persists, consult a healthcare provider to explore other potential underlying conditions, such as endometriosis or IBS, that could be exacerbating your symptoms. This approach will help you enjoy your favorite foods while ensuring they fit well with your body’s needs.
