banana benefits during periods

Shanaya

I am feeling really confused about something that's been on my mind. For like the past few months, I've noticed that my periods have been super irregular and super painful, too. It's like clockwork but not in a good way. I’ve found myself craving bananas like crazy before and during my periods, and I've read a bit about banana benefits during periods. Does eating bananas actually help with relief? One day, I forgot to eat them and felt way worse, but on the days I do, I feel a little better. I mean, is there any real science behind this? I keep hearing that bananas have potassium and that they can help reduce bloating, but how does that even work during periods? Does anyone here know if the supposed banana benefits during periods really hold up? I guess what I'm trying to say is, should I be munching on more bananas during this time? I try to stay healthy, but with all the cravings and mood swings, it’s hard to focus! If the banana benefits during periods really are a thing, that would be awesome! Just looking for some solid advice because this whole period thing is driving me nuts!

Doctors' responses

Eating bananas during your period can indeed be helpful due to some specific nutrients they contain. Bananas are rich in potassium, which plays an important role in balancing fluid levels in the body. This can help reduce bloating, a common symptom during menstruation. Potassium also aids in proper muscle functioning and can potentially help reduce the severity of menstrual cramps by easing muscle tension. Additionally, bananas contain vitamin B6, which has been associated with reducing premenstrual syndrome symptoms like irritability and mood swings. Some studies suggest that vitamin B6 might help manage mood changes by supporting the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, which contributes to mood regulation. However, it’s worth noting that while bananas can provide some relief through these mechanisms, they are not a cure-all for menstrual discomforts. If your period pain is severe or if you’re experiencing very irregular cycles, it would be a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out more serious conditions like endometriosis or fibroids. In the meantime, you could try eating bananas consistently as part of a balanced diet to see if you notice a difference in your symptoms. Combine this with other lifestyle measures such as staying hydrated, engaging in light exercise, and using heat pads to manage menstrual discomfort. Keep in mind that although these self-care practices can be quite beneficial, they should complement professional medical advice especially if symptoms persist or worsen.
