Junel

Rashi

I am a bit frazzled and need some advice about Junel. For the past month, I’ve been taking Junel to help regulate my cycles since they’ve been all over the place. Before I started on Junel, my periods were really erratic—sometimes I wouldn't get one for two months, and then sometimes I’d have two in one month. Anyway, I've noticed some weird things happening since I started taking Junel. First off, the headaches are unreal! I mean, I’ve had headaches before, but this feels like a whole new level. It's also weird because my mood swings are like, all over, jumping from happy to annoyed in a blink. Could this be normal for someone using Junel? On top of that, I think I've gained a little weight, maybe it’s just my imagination or part of the Junel side effects? And I read that it can take a while for your body to adjust, but how long is “a while” really? I just don’t know if I should stick it out with Junel or talk to my doctor about switching to something else. Has anyone else experienced this? Like are these normal issues? I’d love to hear if you felt better after some time or if things just got worse with Junel.

Doctors' responses

It’s understandable to be concerned when experiencing side effects after starting a new medication like Junel, a common oral contraceptive used to regulate menstrual cycles. Several of the symptoms you’re experiencing, such as headaches, mood swings, and potential weight gain, can indeed be side effects of Junel. Headaches can be common due to the hormonal changes Junel induces in your body. Mood swings and emotional changes can also result from the hormonal adjustments as your body is adapting to the new levels. Weight changes are somewhat common with hormonal contraceptives, though it varies from person to person.

The adjustment period to oral contraceptives like Junel can typically take around 3 months for your body to fully adapt to the hormone changes. During these initial months, it’s not uncommon to experience these side effects. However, if the headaches are severe or you notice any other unusual or persistent symptoms, it’s crucial to consult your doctor to ensure there’s no underlying problem. Particularly with significant side effects like unbearable headaches or considerable mood changes, it’s worth re-evaluating your contraceptive choice with your healthcare provider. They may suggest continuing for another cycle if symptoms are improving or, if not, they might consider switching you to a different formulation or method that suits you better. This way, you can manage your cycles without uncomfortable side effects affecting your daily life too much. Always ensure you have open communication with your healthcare provider to keep your treatment aligned with your lifestyle needs and health goals. Remember, you don’t have to stick through something that’s not working for you if there are safer, more comfortable alternatives available.
