How to cure pcos

Arya

I am struggling with some pretty frustrating symptoms and really need advice. Lately, I've been diagnosed with PCOS, and I'm honestly feeling a bit overwhelmed by it all. I’m 28 and started noticing things like irregular periods, weight gain and, oh my gosh, these awful mood swings. Like, one minute I’m fine and then the next I’m super grumpy! My doc said it's common with PCOS but it doesn’t make it any easier. They gave me some options for managing it, but when I asked them how to cure PCOS, they kinda shrugged and mentioned it's more about managing symptoms rather than a complete cure. This has me freaked out! I've been reading everything I can online about meals, exercises like how to cure pcos with diet or specific workouts, but it’s so scattered. Friends have tried herbal remedies and stuff but not sure about that either. Has anyone here actually found effective ways on how to cure pcos? Any advice or experiences would be super helpful because I really want to take control of all this!

Doctors' responses

It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed when first dealing with PCOS because it involves a constellation of symptoms that can impact daily life. Unfortunately, your doctor is correct that there’s no outright cure for PCOS, but managing it effectively can significantly alleviate symptoms. Treatment targets specific concerns like irregular periods, fertility, hair growth, and metabolic issues. First, let’s tackle lifestyle changes; these are vital in managing PCOS effectively. Regular exercise, at least 30 minutes most days of the week, can improve insulin sensitivity, aid in weight management, and boost mood. Opt for a combination of cardio, like walking or swimming, and strength training. Diet plays a crucial role, too. Aim for meals low in processed foods and high in fiber, with a mix of lean proteins and healthy fats like avocados or nuts. This kind of diet can help regulate insulin levels, which is often a pivotal issue in PCOS. Be cautious about online diet fads, though – keeping it simple and sustainable is key. When it comes to medications, there are options based on what symptoms most bother you. Birth control pills can regulate menstrual cycles and reduce androgens causing acne or hair growth. Metformin is another medication that can help with insulin resistance and weight loss in some patients. For emotional aspects like mood swings, counseling or stress-reducing practices like yoga or meditation can be beneficial. Herbal remedies and supplements abound online, but approach these with caution and discuss them with your healthcare provider to avoid any unintended interactions or side effects. Always prioritize medically guided treatments. It’s important to have regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider too, as PCOS can affect long-term health, increasing risks for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular issues. If you notice symptoms like sudden weight gain, severe headaches, or vision changes, you should contact a healthcare provider promptly. While it can be frustrating, focusing on manageable lifestyle changes, medication, and regular medical check-ins can really help you take control and improve quality of life despite PCOS.
