If your period has been ongoing for 13 days and you already have a history of irregular cycles, it’s important to consider several potential causes. A prolonged menstrual period, known as menorrhagia, can be due to a variety of reasons including hormonal imbalances, uterine fibroids, polyps, or more serious conditions such as endometrial hyperplasia or disorders related to bleeding. While irregular periods themselves can sometimes not be immediately concerning, persistent bleeding over 7 days needs more careful attention. First step would be to book an appointment with your healthcare provider who can initiate the right diagnostic process. They might suggest tests like pelvic ultrasound or blood tests to assess hormone levels and rule out other conditions. Until then, make sure you’re staying hydrated and keeping track of any other symptoms like fatigue or dizziness, which could indicate anemia due to blood loss. Avoid NSAIDs like ibuprofen if you’re experiencing heavy bleeding since they can sometimes exacerbate it. If you experience, severe pain, feel faint, or if bleeding becomes heavy enough to soak through a pad or tampon every hour or so, it would be considered a medical urgency, and you should seek immediate medical care. You might be prescribed medication to help regulate your cycle or stop the bleeding, such as tranexamic acid, hormonal contraceptives, or possibly an iron supplement if there’s a concern about iron-deficiency anemia. While waiting for your appointment, maintain a balanced diet rich in iron and vitamin C, which can help support your blood levels.
