If your legs are swollen to such a degree and you have drainage from your ankle, it’s crucial to seek medical attention promptly. Swelling like that could indicate a serious condition, and drainage suggests that there might be a break in the skin, increasing the risk of infection. Infections can be dangerous, especially if they spread. Immediate evaluation by a healthcare professional is important to prevent complications. They can assess the underlying cause of swelling, which could range from venous insufficiency or lymphedema to more urgent conditions like heart or kidney issues. The presence of drainage is particularly concerning as it might indicate cellulitis, an abscess, or another type of infection that requires antibiotic treatment. Go to the hospital or urgent care for a thorough examination. They might perform diagnostic tests like blood work, imaging studies such as an ultrasound or a x-ray, depending on what they find on examination. Until you’re seen by a doctor, try to keep the affected leg elevated to promote drainage and reduce swelling. Avoid applying any compressive bandages without advice from a healthcare provider, as improper use can exacerbate the problem or lead to more discomfort. This isn’t a situation for self-treatment or delay, since if an infection is present, timely medical intervention is essential.
