Doctors' responses

Irregular periods and spotting over such an extended period at your age can be concerning and need thorough investigation. There are several potential causes for these symptoms which include hormonal imbalances, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), stress, significant weight changes, thyroid disorders, or even side effects from contraception if you’re using any. Firstly, it’s important to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider such as a gynecologist who can conduct a more detailed assessment. They might perform a physical examination and recommend blood tests to check hormone levels or an ultrasound to look at your ovaries and uterus. Based on these findings, they can determine the cause of your irregular periods. If hormonal imbalance is found, treatment options might include hormonal therapies like birth control pills which can help regularize your cycle. Lifestyle modifications such as maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management techniques can also be beneficial. It’s crucial not to ignore these symptoms as they could potentially impact your overall health and fertility in the future. While waiting for your appointment, it might be helpful to track your menstrual cycle to provide your healthcare provider with detailed information about your periods and spotting patterns. If you experience severe pain, unusually heavy bleeding, or dizziness, seek immediate medical attention.
