which side of body is liver - #18539

Aditi

I am just super confused about something, and I really need some help. For a while now, I've been feeling this weird heaviness on my right side, like, almost under my rib cage, and it’s been bothering me a lot. I thought I pulled a muscle or something doing yoga, but then my friend mentioned that might be where the liver is, and now I’m trying to figure out which side of body is liver because I’m just not sure. I tried looking it up, but everything I find just makes me more confused! And the heaviness kinda feels like it comes and goes, sometimes it’s a dull ache, and other times it’s like a sharp pang, so I can’t even pin point what’s going on. My doc did some blood work, but honestly, I’m not even sure what they checked for. Could this heaviness be liver-related?? Like, which side of body is liver if it's acting up? I mean, I really want to get to the bottom of this because I’ve been feeling off and it’s making me worry. Anyone else dealt with similar stuff? Any insights on which side of body is liver or any other what to look for would be super helpful!

Doctors' responses

The liver is primarily on the right side of your body, just under the rib cage. It’s a large organ, kind of working alongside other tissues there, so any discomfort or different symptoms in that area might possibly involve the liver, but it could be something else. Heaviness or pain that comes and goes could have several causes, from mild issues like muscle strain to something that needs more attention. Given that blood work was already done by your doctor, it’s likely they checked liver function tests, which can help identify inflammation or liver dysfunction if present. Results may indicate the state of your liver’s health; you can always ask your doctor what exact tests were conducted. Besides potential liver issues, this sensation could relate to other conditions like gallbladder problems or intestinal issues. To get to the bottom of it, try to take note if anything specific triggers or worsens the symptoms, like certain foods or activities. If the blood test doesn’t reveal much or things persist or worsen, a follow-up with your doctor is a good idea, perhaps even mentioning detailed tests like an ultrasound could offer more context. If it’s sharp pain or you notice symptoms like jaundice, dark urine, or extreme fatigue, those are reasons to seek more immediate medical attention. For now, try to stay hydrated, avoid excessive alcohol, heavy or fatty meals, and note any other symptoms that crop up. In the meantime, reviewing your recent activities or any dietary changes might help provide clues.
