is sattu good for health - #22348

Nikhil

I am kinda curious about this thing called sattu. I've heard a lot about it lately, and honestly, I just don’t know if is sattu good for health or if it’s just another health fad. A few weeks ago, I tried some sattu drink my friend raved about, and I thought it tasted kinda weird but refreshing in a way? My stomach has been feeling all funny since then, but I’m not sure if that’s related. The other day, I googled and found some articles saying how nutritious it's supposed to be—high in protein and fiber, etc. But then I read some conflicting stuff, saying it might not be for everyone. I have a family history of digestive issues, and now I’m wondering if is sattu good for health overall for someone like me. Should I be cautious with it? Like, could it cause bloating or anything? I know people have different reactions to foods, but man, I really need some clear advice here. Is sattu good for health or should I stick to my usual stuff? I kinda want to give it another shot but just don’t wanna mess my stomach up even more. Would love to hear some thoughts from you all on this!

Doctors' responses

Sattu, which is essentially roasted and powdered gram or other grains, can indeed be a nutritious addition to your diet. It’s known for being high in protein, fiber, and essential nutrients like iron and magnesium. For many, incorporating it into meals can be beneficial, particularly in terms of sustained energy and digestive health due to its fiber content. However, as with any dietary change, there are considerations to keep in mind, especially given your family history of digestive issues. Sattu is high in fiber, which can sometimes lead to bloating or digestive discomfort if consumed in large amounts or if your body isn’t used to such levels. Your recent stomach discomfort could be related, especially if this was your first time trying it.

If you’re considering giving sattu another go, it might be best to start with smaller amounts to see how your body reacts. Consider mixing it with buttermilk or yogurt rather than water—it can be easier on your digestion, and the probiotics in those ingredients might help offset any potential bloating. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water throughout the day, as fiber requires adequate hydration to move smoothly through the digestive tract. Also, listen to your body; if discomfort persists, it may be best to limit or avoid it and seek advice from a healthcare provider. They might want to explore other factors that could be affecting your digestion. While sattu can be beneficial, it’s crucial to consider your own digestive health and any potential red flags. If experimenting with sattu seems to worsen your symptoms consistently, sticking with your usual, more familiar foods might be the safer route.
