How long can I continue to grow taller at 21 years old and what supplements can help? - #30387

MI

Good evening, Doctor. My situation is strange, and I don't understand anything. I'm 21 years and 10 months old. When I was younger, I was shorter than my friends. Around the age of 19 and throughout my 20s, I only grew about 2 centimeters in those two years. I thought my platelets had stopped growing. My height at that time was 169 cm. I started growing taller again at the beginning of my 21st year, with increases of 0.7, sometimes 0.8, and sometimes 0.5 centimeters per month until now. As I approach 22, I've gained a total of 7 centimeters, and my height is now 176 cm. I'm still growing 0.5 centimeters every month. The last time I grew was last month. I'm in my third year of university. All my friends have stopped growing except me. I'm happy with this growth and I want to know until what age this growth can continue, and what nutritional supplements I can take to help me make the most of this growth phase.

Dr. Bharat Joshi
I’m a periodontist and academician with a strong clinical and teaching background. Over the last 4 years and 8 months, I’ve been actively involved in dental education, guiding students at multiple levels including dental hygienist, BDS, and MDS programs. Currently, I serve as a Reader at MMCDSR in Ambala, Haryana—a role that allows me to merge my academic passion with hands-on experience. Clinically, I’ve been practicing dentistry for the past 12 years. From routine procedures like scaling and root planing to more advanced cases involving grafts, biopsies, and implant surgeries. Honestly, I still find joy in doing a simple RCT when it’s needed. It’s not just about the procedure but making sure the patient feels comfortable and safe. Academically, I have 26 research publications to my credit. I’m on the editorial boards of the Archives of Dental Research and Journal of Dental Research and Oral Health, and I’ve spent a lot of time reviewing manuscripts—from case reports to meta-analyses and even book reviews. I was honored to receive the “Best Editor” award by Innovative Publications, and Athena Publications recognized me as an “excellent reviewer,” which honestly came as a bit of a surprise! In 2025, I had the opportunity to present a guest lecture in Italy on traumatic oral lesions. Sharing my work and learning from peers globally has been incredibly fulfilling. Outside academics and clinics, I’ve also worked in the pharmaceutical sector as a Drug Safety Associate for about 3 years, focusing on pharmacovigilance. That role really sharpened my attention to detail and deepened my understanding of drug interactions and adverse effects. My goal is to keep learning, and give every patient and student my absolute best.

At 21 years old, it’s less common but not impossible to continue growing taller. Typically, most people stop growing in height after their epiphyseal growth plates close, which usually happens by around 18-21 years old in most males. However, the timing can vary due to genetic factors, nutritional status, and overall health. It’s possible that your growth plates have remained open longer, allowing for this late growth spurt. Regarding how long this growth can continue; it’s challenging to predict accurately without specific diagnostic tests like an X-ray to see if your growth plates are still open. You might want to discuss this with a healthcare professional who can provide a personalized evaluation. As for supplements, a well-balanced diet rich in essential nutrients supporting bone health can be beneficial. Focus on calcium and vitamin D for bone strength, possibly from diet or a high-quality supplement if you’re deficient. Ensure you’re getting sufficient protein and nutrients like magnesium and zinc, which are important for bone health. However, there’s no supplement that can guarantee further height increase once growth plates are closed. Stay clear of products marketed with high promises but little scientific backing. Also, maintain a physical activity level; exercises such as swimming, cycling, or basketball can promote good posture and general health, which can subtly optimize your height appearance. Proper rest and sleep are equally crucial. Remember, if your growth seems unusual or if you’re concerned about hormonal imbalances (like excess growth hormone), it’s prudent to seek further evaluation from an endocrinologist. They can conduct the necessary tests to ensure everything is progressing normally.
