sugar cane juice is heat or cold - #23809
I am kinda confused about this whole sugar cane juice thing. A few weeks ago, I was visiting my aunt in the summer and she offered me some fresh sugar cane juice. It was super sweet and refreshing, but then I heard someone say it’s actually heat! Like, heat as in it raises your body temperature? I thought in hot weather, we should stick to cold drinks. But now I’m wondering, is sugar cane juice really heat or cold? I know people drink it to cool down, but I heard it can create internal heat if you drink too much, especially in summer, which just doesn’t make sense to me. I mean, how can something that seems so cooling be hot? My aunt always says sugar cane juice is heat, and that if you have a sore throat or something, you're not supposed to drink it. But then the seller at the market claimed it helps with hydration and all during those hot days. I don’t want to mess up my digestion or feel worse. Should I avoid sugar cane juice altogether on hot days? Like, do I need to balance it out with something else, or is it fine to enjoy? Ugh, this is so confusing! Any thoughts?

Doctors' responses
Sugar cane juice is a popular beverage known for its refreshing taste, especially in hot climates. But the idea of whether it’s “heat” or “cold” is more rooted in traditional or cultural beliefs than scientific evidence. In various traditional systems, certain foods and drinks are classified based on the balance they create in your body. Sugar cane juice is often considered a cooling drink, and it’s commonly enjoyed in hot weather for its hydrating properties, primarily because it’s mostly composed of water and natural sugars, which can quickly replenish fluids and energy. However, there might be some confusion because it also contains sugars and carbohydrates which can slightly increase metabolic activity as your body processes them, leading to a myth that it generates “internal heat”.
From a modern medical perspective, sugar cane juice does not inherently raise your body temperature. It could, theoretically, influence metabolism in a minor way due to its natural sugars, but this effect is negligible when enjoyed in moderation. If you’re worried about digestion or other health concerns, consider how your body typically responds to sugary beverages in general. People with conditions like diabetes or those needing to manage blood sugar should be cautious with the intake due to its high sugar content. As for sore throats, while some believe sugary drinks might worsen throat irritation, in moderation, it shouldn’t really pose a direct problem unless you notice personal discomfort.
To enjoy sugar cane juice safely, consume it fresh and in moderation, ensuring it’s prepared under hygienic conditions to avoid any contamination—important especially in hotter weather. There’s no need to avoid it entirely on hot days if you enjoy it. Balancing your intake with plenty of water is always a good idea to stay hydrated. If you notice any discomfort after drinking it, or have specific health conditions, it’s always advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
