why is jaggery better than sugar - #24033

Vikram

I am really curious about this whole thing I heard from my friend the other day about why is jaggery better than sugar. I've always just used plain white sugar for everything, like my morning coffee and in baking, but she mentioned after her last health checkup that she switched to jaggery. She talked about how jaggery has all these minerals and nutrients in it, which got me thinking – like do those actually matter? I’ve been feeling kinda sluggish and usually get these sugar crashes after lunch, like totally out of energy, and I wonder if maybe switching to jaggery could help me feel better. But, then I saw some posts online saying that jaggery is still sugar, just less refined, right? Is it true that jaggery has a lower glycemic index? Or are there any negatives I should consider? My dad’s diabetic, and I wouldn't want to just assume jaggery is a safe swap without knowing if it really is worth it. Like why is jaggery better than sugar when you look at the whole picture? Should I even take that plunge or just stick with my usual? Anyone out there who switched and noticed a big difference? Would love to hear thoughts!

Doctors' responses

Jaggery is indeed less refined than white sugar, retaining more of its natural nutrients like iron, magnesium, and potassium, which can be beneficial in small quantities. These trace minerals can support overall health, unlike white sugar which is mostly stripped of these during its refining process. However, when it comes to actual impact on blood sugar levels, jaggery still behaves quite similarly to white sugar—meaning it can cause spikes in blood sugar levels if consumed in large amounts. The glycemic index (GI) of jaggery is not significantly lower than that of table sugar, so it won’t necessarily resolve issues like sugar crashes if you don’t moderate its intake.

Switching to jaggery might be slightly better for overall nutrition, but it won’t replace the need for a balanced diet and regular exercise for improved energy levels. Given your father’s diabetes, it’s crucial to understand that jaggery is not significantly safer than sugar for someone with diabetes or pre-diabetes, as both need to be consumed with caution due to their high sugar content. If your sluggishness and sugar crashes are a concern, consider evaluating your diet and lifestyle more broadly. Eating balanced meals with complex carbohydrates, fibers, and protein can help maintain steadier blood glucose levels. Keep yourself hydrated and consider regular physical activity to better manage energy dips throughout the day. Consulting with a healthcare provider might be helpful to explore more personalized advice based on your overall health picture. If you’re thinking about making any changes to a diabetic’s diet specifically, it’s important to discuss with a specialist who can provide appropriate guidance tailored to individual health needs.
