can we drink beetroot juice in evening - #24463

Janvi

I am really confused about drinking beetroot juice, you know? My nutritionist said it’s packed with nutrients and stuff but I’ve heard mixed opinions on the timing. Last week I tried drinking beetroot juice in the evening after a workout cause I thought it might help with recovery. But then I saw somewhere online that it might not be the best idea, like potentially affecting sleep or something?? I mean it tastes great and all but does drinking beetroot juice in the evening actually have any downsides? I noticed I felt kinda energetic after, which I guess is good but then I couldn't wind down properly. Also, I read something about how beetroot juice can raise blood pressure or improve circulation – is that still true even if you drink it in the evening? I just worry that if I drink beetroot juice in the evening, it might give me insomnia or something worse. And I don’t want to mess with my sleep routine. Anyone else had this dilemma? Can we drink beetroot juice in evening without it interfering with sleep or health in general? Any thoughts would be super helpful!

Doctors' responses

Drinking beetroot juice in the evening is generally safe for most people, but there are few factors to consider. Beetroot juice is rich in nitrates that can improve blood flow and athletic performance, which might explain why you felt an energy boost post-workout. This boost, while beneficial, could potentially make it harder for some to wind down at night, potentially messing with sleep. You might find drinking it earlier in the day preferable if you’re experiencing issues with sleep. On the flip side, some people report that the improved circulation also helps them relax, so it varies. Regarding blood pressure, beetroot juice is known for its potential to lower, not raise, blood pressure by helping blood vessels to dilate. So, if you’re concerned about blood pressure, it’s actually more of a benefit than a risk, unless you’re on medication where low blood pressure could pose a concern. It’s always sound practice to consult with a healthcare provider if you’re unsure about interactions with existing medications or conditions. Given that individual responses can differ quite a bit, you might want to experiment a little with timing to see how your body reacts. Monitor how you sleep on nights you drink the juice and adjust accordingly. Remember, balance is key, and if beetroot juice doesn’t fit into your evening routine comfortably, enjoying it in the morning or before early afternoon workouts might be a better option.
