is falooda good for health - #24893

Aditi

I am really curious about this dessert I had last week. I was at a small Indian restaurant with some friends, and they ordered falooda. I've heard people rave about it, but I never had it before. I mean, it looks super colorful and all, with the layers of noodles, basil seeds, and ice cream on top! But now I’m wondering, is falooda good for health? I’m a bit skeptical because it’s kind of loaded with sugar and calories, right? After indulging in that giant bowl, I felt satisfied, but also kind of guilty. I guess my question comes from that. I’ve been trying to watch my diet lately because I’ve been feeling more sluggish. Also, my friend who had it said it’s got some health benefits too—like the basil seeds and maybe even the milk. Is falooda good for health? Should it really have a place in a balanced diet? Or is it more just a treat, you know? I saw some versions with fruits, does that change anything, like does it make it more healthy or what? Just trying to figure out if I can enjoy this without totally derailing my healthy eating! Is falooda good for health or should I stick to something else next time?

Doctors' responses

Falooda, with its vibrant layers of vermicelli noodles, basil seeds, milk, and ice cream, indeed makes for a delicious and intriguing treat. While it offers certain ingredients that have beneficial components, categorizing falooda as inherently “good” for health would be a bit of a stretch. The concern you have about sugar and calories is quite valid. Being a dessert, falooda often contains a substantial amount of added sugars and calories, primarily due to the sweetened milk, ice cream, and sometimes syrupy toppings. These can contribute to increased caloric intake, which if not balanced with physical activity, might affect weight and, over time, lead to issues like insulin resistance. In terms of health benefits, the basil seeds (sabja) are a highlight. They are high in dietary fiber and provide minerals like calcium and magnesium. They may aid in digestion and have a calming effect, which could contribute positively to a balanced dietary regime. Introducing fruits to falooda can bump up its nutritional content by adding vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, while potentially lowering the dessert’s glycemic index compared to its regular overly sweetened form. However, this doesn’t completely offset the other calorie-dense components. In moderation, falooda can be enjoyed as part of a diverse diet, especially with some health-conscious adjustments—opt for less sugar or a lighter portion size. If your focus is weight management or controlling blood sugar levels, treating falooda as an occasional indulgence rather than a habitual inclusion in your diet would be prudent. Including more fruits, using low-fat milk, or choosing less sugary alternatives could make it more compatible with your health goals. Finally, if you’ve been feeling sluggish, assessing your overall diet, sleep patterns, and activity levels might help pinpoint other areas for improvement.
