peas is a herb or shrub - #25018
I am trying to figure out something about peas because I heard different things. My grandma always called peas a vegetable. But the other day someone said peas is a herb or shrub! Like, wait what?? I mean, I’ve been eating peas my whole life and thought they were just a side dish. I remember when I was a kid, my mom used to plant peas in our garden every spring and we’d watch them grow. She’d say to start eating them when they are plump. Now I’m confused! Is it true that peas is a herb or shrub or is that just misinformation? I did some quick searching online, and honestly, it was more confusing than helpful. Some articles say that because they have certain botanical qualities, peas can be categorized as a legume and might fit into the herb category too? I really don’t know how that works. Do they just call it a herb or shrub depending on how you use it or is it really a classification thing? I feel like I’m missing something important here. Help!!

Peas are indeed a bit of a botanical conundrum, but let’s untangle it. They’re primarily classified as legumes, which are plants that bear fruit in pods. This is a core part of their identity, and why they’re considered highly nutritious. From a botanical standpoint, peas belong to the family Fabaceae (or Leguminosae), which includes a wide range of plants like lentils and beans. Now, to address the herb or shrub part: peas themselves grow on vine-like structures, so calling them a shrub isn’t technically correct. Shrubs are typically woody plants that have multiple stems and are above the ground, while peas grow on softer, non-woody vines. Herbs, on the other hand, are usually plants valued for their flavor, scent, or medicinal properties. Peas are sometimes considered herbs more informally because they are edible plant parts, but this isn’t their primary classification. In cooking, peas are often called vegetables because of how they’re used in meals, adding another layer of complexity. So, while the term “herb” might apply depending on usage context, scientifically, they’re a legume. Thus, describing peas as vegetables is more related to culinary traditions than strict botanical rules. Ultimately, whether you’re planting them in your garden or enjoying them on your plate, peas remain a versatile, nutritious part of our diet with a rather straightforward scientific classification.
