what is shilajit - #25425

Aryan

I am really curious about what is shilajit. A week ago, my friend told me about it while we were hiking in the mountains. He mentioned he started taking it and claimed it gave him tons of energy and helped with his workouts. I felt super intrigued but had no clue what this stuff actually is. I tried to do some research online, but there’s like a million conflicting sources. I mean, is it a supplement? A mineral? I looked up what is shilajit and found out it’s a sticky substance found mainly in the Himalayas, but I have no idea how it works. I’ve been feeling more tired than usual lately, and between work and family stuff, I'm thinking maybe this could help. Would it actually give me that boost like my friend said? What is shilajit made from? Are there any side effects? I read some sites saying it can be beneficial for mood and energy, but others caution against taking it without proper knowledge. How do I know if its worth trying? Like, should I ask my doctor first or just dive in? Any advice would be awesome!

Doctors' responses

Shilajit is indeed an intriguing substance, and it’s not uncommon for people to come across mixed information about it. It is a natural, tar-like material that primarily comes from rocks in the Himalayas, among other mountain ranges. This substance is essentially formed over centuries by the decomposition of plants and contains a significant concentration of minerals, humic acid, and fulvic acid. Many people use shilajit as a supplement for its potential benefits, which have been highlighted in traditional systems like Ayurveda. Users often tout advantages such as increased energy, improved athletic performance, and enhanced mood. But scientific research on shilajit’s effectiveness is somewhat limited and primarily in preliminary stages. What is clear is shilajit’s rich mineral content may potentially support various bodily functions. If you’re considering it for boosting energy, you should weigh factors like the quality and source of the product, as these can vary greatly. As for side effects, while shilajit is generally considered safe, it’s not without risk. Issues can arise if it contains contaminants due to improper sourcing or processing. Always ensure the supplement is from a reputable supplier and has third-party testing for safety. Those with certain conditions, like gout or hormonal disorders, should be cautious because shilajit might affect uric acid levels and have hormone-modulating effects. Before starting any new supplement, especially if you have any existing health conditions or are on medication, it would be wise to discuss it with your healthcare provider to ensure it’s appropriate for you. They could evaluate if it aligns with your current health needs and won’t interact with other treatments you might be undergoing. While shilajit might offer some benefits, it’s crucial to approach it thoughtfully and with an understanding of your unique health situation.
