side effects of eating curd everyday - #27044

Vedant

I am really confused about the side effects of eating curd everyday. Last month, I started eating curd thinking it’d be great for my digestion, plus I read it has probiotics and stuff, but now I'm kinda feeling funny. Like, at first, it was amazing! I felt lighter and more energetic, but then I noticed some bloating. My stomach doesn't seem to like it anymore, and I’ve also been getting this weird acid reflux after meals. I dunno, maybe it’s just me? But I keep wondering if I could be having some of those side effects of eating curd everyday that people talk about. Shouldn’t it be healthy? I even read somewhere that it can help with gut health, but now I'm second-guessing myself. Has anyone else had a similar experience with the side effects of eating curd everyday? I wonder if I should cut back or try different kinds. Like, should I mix it with fruits or something? I'm scared to mess with my stomach more, but I really enjoyed it at first! Am I overreacting or is this actually a real thing? Any input would be appreciated!

Doctors' responses

Eating curd every day can definitely have a slew of health benefits, primarily owing to the presence of probiotics you mentioned, which are good for gut health. However, like any food, individual reactions can vary. The bloating and acid reflux you described might be related to lactose intolerance or sensitivity to dairy. While curd is often easier to digest than milk, because of its lower lactose levels due to fermentation, some people still find dairy products cause discomfort. If you’re experiencing bloating or acid reflux, it might be worth considering if you’re sensitive or intolerant to dairy. Trying lactose-free curd or plant-based yogurt made from almond, coconut, or soy milk could be a less irritating option, potentially reducing symptoms while still giving you the probiotics benefits. Mixing curd with fruits could be a good idea, as it can add natural sweetness and fiber, which may help counteract any potential digestive discomfort. An elimination dietary approach for a couple of weeks could be quite helpful—removing curd from your diet to see if symptoms subside, and then reintroducing it gradually to determine if it’s actually the source of your issues. Additionally, make sure to consume curd in moderation as large quantities might impact your digestion negatively because even healthy bacteria, when consumed in excess, can sometimes lead to digestive issues. If symptoms persist or worsen, consulting a healthcare professional to rule out other gastrointestinal issues or gain more personalized advice would be prudent. Although it may feel overwhelming, paying attention to how your body reacts and making small adjustments patiently is essential to finding the right balance.
