disadvantages of curd - #27068

Nikhil

I am really confused about the disadvantages of curd. I’ve always heard it’s super healthy, right? But lately, I’ve felt kind of bloated and gassy after eating it. Like, more than usual! Last week, I had a big bowl of curd with my dinner, and wow, I was in discomfort for hours. My friend said maybe there are some disadvantages of curd that I'm not aware of. I tried looking it up, but not much came up apart from the benefits. I do know curd is rich in probiotics, but what about those disadvantages of curd? Could it be that I’m lactose intolerant or something? I mean, eating ice cream is fine, but then again, I have stomach issues. It's weird. My mom says curd is good for digestion, but I feel like my digestion is worse now. Also, is there anyone else who has experienced issues like this? The other day, I heard someone mention that curd might increase mucus production, which I thought was odd. Can anyone shed some light on the real disadvantages of curd? I honestly just want to understand if it’s worth it or if I should cut back. Appreciate any insights!

While curd is generally known for its health benefits, it’s possible for some individuals to experience adverse effects. One reason for the bloating and gas you’ve noticed may be lactose intolerance. This happens when your body has difficulty digesting lactose, the sugar in dairy products. Even though curd can have lower lactose levels than milk due to the fermentation process, it still contains enough to potentially cause symptoms in sensitive individuals. It’s interesting you don’t feel the same discomfort with ice cream, but the symptoms can vary depending on the amount you eat and other factors in your diet. Another possibility could be an allergy to milk proteins, which can also cause digestive issues, saying nothing of other symptoms like sneezing or rash—definitely worth discussing with a healthcare provider if you suspect an allergy. You’ve mentioned curd’s digestion-promoting qualities - these are due to the probiotics that support gut health. But, for some, any sudden increase in probiotics can temporarily lead to digestive upset. If you suspect the mucus production you heard about is affecting you, take note that some people feel this when consuming dairy. However, this varies greatly and is not definitively backed by strong scientific evidence. Given your situation, assessing tolerance by reducing the amount you consume or experimenting with lactose-free curd options might be useful. If symptoms persist despite these measures, a consultation with a healthcare provider would be beneficial to rule out other digestive conditions. Keep in mind that everyone’s digestive system is unique, so what works for one person might not work for another.
