selenium rich nuts - #27279
I am feeling a bit overwhelmed and need some clarity on this selenium rich nuts thing. A few weeks ago, I started feeling really tired all the time, like I could barely get out of bed. My friend mentioned that I might be deficient in selenium or something, and that selenium rich nuts could help. I’ve read that Brazil nuts are a big source of selenium, and omg I love those! However, I also heard that you shouldn’t eat too many 'cause they can have too much selenium? Also, what about other selenium rich nuts? I tried some macadamia nuts too, thinking they might be good but I’m not sure how they compare. When I looked it up online, I thought I saw something that said too much selenium can actually be harmful, like it can lead to selenium toxicity or whatnot, which made me super worried! I don’t wanna mess up my health trying to feel better, ya know? How many of these selenium rich nuts should I actually be eating in a day to get the benefits without risking too much? It feels like it’s all so confusing! Any advice would be much appreciated.

Doctors' responses
Feeling fatigued can be frustrating, especially when deciphering whether it might be a nutritional deficiency like selenium. You’re right that Brazil nuts are an excellent source of selenium, but it’s crucial to consume them in moderation to avoid selenium toxicity. Just one or two Brazil nuts a day can meet or exceed your daily selenium requirement due to their high selenium content, often enough to get your levels back to where they shoud be without overdoing it. Selenium is essential for thyroid function and antioxidant protection, but too much can lead to symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, or even more severe problems over time, such as hair loss or nail changes. Macadamia nuts, on the other hand, aren’t particularly high in selenium compared to Brazil nuts. They contain beneficial fats and other nutrients but aren’t a significant selenium source.
If you’re worried about selenium levels, a blood test can confirm whether you genuinely have a deficiency needing attention. While supplementing with selenium-rich foods can be beneficial, remember that fatigue can have many causes, including stress, sleep disturbances, or other nutrient deficiencies. Consulting with your healthcare provider can ensure your approach is well-rounded and based on your specific health needs. On a day-to-day basis, trust that a varied, balanced diet generally provides what your body needs, and if not, medical advice can offer a clear path forward.
