what is makhana called in english - #28745

Parthiv

I am kind of puzzled and need your help! So, I’ve been talking to my grandma a lot lately and she keeps mentioning this snack she loves called Makhanas. I was like, what is makhana called in english? It’s this puffed snack that she says is super healthy and good for the heart, but I wanted to find out what it is in english, you know? I've done some googling, and I think some people call them fox nuts, but that sound off to me. Sometimes, I’m not sure if people are referring to the same thing. My grandma was telling me how she used to munch on them while watching her favorite shows and that they were a staple in her diet. I remember tasting them once, and it was kinda like eating popcorn but more flavorful? But anyway, I tried looking it up more and came across a few health benefits that sound amazing – like they’re low in calories and high in protein, which is great for snacking! But still, what is makhana called in english? Is fox nut the same thing? Like, should I be on the lookout for that name in the store? I feel a bit lost and just want to add these in my diet. Anyone have some insights? Thanks!

Doctors' responses

Makhana is indeed called fox nuts in English, and they are also known as lotus seeds or gorgon nuts. You might sometimes see them labeled as popped lotus seeds in stores. Fox nuts are the seeds of the Euryale fox, a type of water lily, and they have gained popularity due to their nutritional benefits and versatility, making them a great snack option. They are low in calories and high in protein and fiber, which can help in maintaining a healthy diet and may be beneficial for heart health. When shopping, you might find them in the snack aisle, health food section, or sometimes in nuts and seeds shelves, especially in stores that stock international or Indian foods. Regarding preparation, they can be roasted, flavored with spices, and used similarly to popcorn or nuts as a crunchy snack. They can also be used in cooking, like in curries or porridges. Given their nutritional profile, if you’re interested in including them in your diet, it’s simple to add them once you locate them in the store. Just look out for packages with “Makhana” or “Fox Nuts” written on them. Remember, while they are quite nutritious, moderation is key in any diet; too much of even a good thing can sometimes go awry. Rehydration might be needed for cooking, particularly if they come in a dry form. If you have any dietary restrictions or specific health concerns, it might be helpful to chat with a health professional to ensure they fit your nutritional needs well. Check for recipe ideas to enjoy their versatility in your meals.
