Post covid popping and cracking joints - #29208
I am really freaked out here. A few months after having COVID, I've noticed this constant post covid popping and cracking joints thing going on. It started with my knees, every time I bent them or stood up, they would like pop loudly, and I thought it was just no big deal but lately, its gotten worse. Now my shoulders are popping too, and it’s kind of painful sometimes, like there's a stiffness that wasn’t there before. I'm like, seriously?? Is this a post covid popping and cracking joints thing I should be worried about? I talked to my doctor, and they said it's not uncommon after having COVID, which didn't really ease my mind. I don’t think I’m imagining this either. My friends are saying maybe it's just age (I’m not that old, come on) but it really feels like something is off. I can’t find much info on post covid popping and cracking joints other than other people talking about the same things. I’m just like, what even causes this?? Could it be a sign of something? Should I be doing exercises or something to help? I'm honestly a little scared since I work out a lot, and I just want my body to go back to how it was. Any advice?

What you’re describing isn’t entirely unheard of following a COVID infection. Some patients report joint popping and cracking, often related to joint or muscle inflammation that can linger after a viral infection. The stiffness and popping sounds you’re experiencing are possibly due to transient inflammatory changes in your joints or surrounding soft tissues. There’s still a lot we don’t fully understand about the long-term effects of COVID, but joint issues can be part of post-viral syndromes. First, consider some simple steps to alleviate symptoms. Keep active, but aim for low-impact activities like swimming or cycling that lessen stress on your joints while still maintaining mobility. Regular stretching exercises, focusing on flexibility and strengthening surrounding muscles, might help with stiffness and minimize the intensity of joint popping. Pay attention to your body’s signals, rest adequately, and avoid pushing through pain during workouts. If symptoms continue or worsen, consider consulting a rheumatologist to rule out other underlying conditions like arthritis. A detailed examination, possibly including blood tests or imaging, can reveal more. It’s also worth monitoring any accompanying symptoms, such as swelling, persistent pain, or redness around the joints, which might warrant more immediate medical attention. Finally, it’s quite normal to feel concerned when your body’s behaving out of the ordinary, but addressing these basics should ease some discomfort.
