Is it safe for a 15-year-old to take creatine for gym performance? - #29731

Client_a13fb7

I am a 15-year-old boy. I want to start taking 3-5g of creatine monohydrate daily for gym performance. I plan to drink 3L of water every day and have a high-protein diet. Is this safe for my kidneys at this age, or should I wait until I am 18?

Have you consulted with a doctor or nutritionist about taking creatine?:

- No, I haven't consulted anyone

Do you have any pre-existing kidney issues or family history of kidney problems?:

- I don't know

How long have you been training at the gym?:

- Less than 6 months

What is your current daily protein intake from food?:

- 50g to 100g

How do you feel after your workouts?:

- Great, I recover well

Are you taking any other supplements or medications?:

- No, just creatine

How much water do you typically drink daily?:

- More than 3L

I’m a periodontist and academician with a strong clinical and teaching background. Over the last 4 years and 8 months, I’ve been actively involved in dental education, guiding students at multiple levels including dental hygienist, BDS, and MDS programs. Currently, I serve as a Reader at MMCDSR in Ambala, Haryana—a role that allows me to merge my academic passion with hands-on experience. Clinically, I’ve been practicing dentistry for the past 12 years. From routine procedures like scaling and root planing to more advanced cases involving grafts, biopsies, and implant surgeries. Honestly, I still find joy in doing a simple RCT when it’s needed. It’s not just about the procedure but making sure the patient feels comfortable and safe. Academically, I have 26 research publications to my credit. I’m on the editorial boards of the Archives of Dental Research and Journal of Dental Research and Oral Health, and I’ve spent a lot of time reviewing manuscripts—from case reports to meta-analyses and even book reviews. I was honored to receive the “Best Editor” award by Innovative Publications, and Athena Publications recognized me as an “excellent reviewer,” which honestly came as a bit of a surprise! In 2025, I had the opportunity to present a guest lecture in Italy on traumatic oral lesions. Sharing my work and learning from peers globally has been incredibly fulfilling. Outside academics and clinics, I’ve also worked in the pharmaceutical sector as a Drug Safety Associate for about 3 years, focusing on pharmacovigilance. That role really sharpened my attention to detail and deepened my understanding of drug interactions and adverse effects. My goal is to keep learning, and give every patient and student my absolute best.

Please follow them for atleast a month Replacement of carbohydrates with protein diet Take nuts and fruits in between meals Be hydrated Avoid junk food Take zincovit multivitamin therapy onca a day for 1 month Consume butter and ghee for weight gain Replacement of sugar with jaggery Avoid refined food Do physical exercise atleast half an hour daily Avoid excessive thinking Add milk products for calcium level Hopefully improvement will occur In case of no improvement consult a dietician in person for better clarity Regards

There’s a lack of comprehensive research on the use of creatine in adolescents under 18, so the safety can’t be absolutely guaranteed. At your age, your body is still developing, and the long-term effects of creatine haven’t been clearly established for teenagers. It’s not uncommon for athletes to use creatine because it can help increase strength and muscle mass, but starting supplements at a young age without fully understanding the potential risks can be concerning. Kidneys can be affected by creatine, particularly if there’s a pre-existing kidney condition. Staying hydrated, like you mentioned with 3L water intake, is beneficial, but it doesn’t necessarily eliminate risks if your kidneys aren’t mature enough to handle extra load. Also, creatine may have an effect on your nutrition balance, as it can influence the way your body processes protein and other nutrients. It might be best to wait until you’re older and your body is more fully developed or consult with a healthcare provider. Instead, you could focus on enhancing your nutrition, exercise regimen, and overall fitness naturally, which can be quite impactful. If you’re considering a new supplement or have any health conditions, discussing with a healthcare professional is always a solid approach. It’s important to evaluate any potential interactions and ensure personalized advice that takes your individual health into account.
