I am a 15-year-old boy. I want to start taking 3-5g of creatine monohydrate daily for gym performance. I plan to drink 3L of water every day and have a high-protein diet. Is this safe for my kidneys at this age, or should I wait until I am 18?

How intense is your current exercise routine?:

- Moderate, regular workouts

How would you describe your overall hydration habits?:

Have you experienced any side effects from supplements in the past?:

- Not sure

What does your typical daily diet look like?:

- Balanced with fruits and vegetables

Are you currently taking any other supplements or medications?:

- No, only creatine

Dr. Bharat Joshi
I’m a periodontist and academician with a strong clinical and teaching background. Over the last 4 years and 8 months, I’ve been actively involved in dental education, guiding students at multiple levels including dental hygienist, BDS, and MDS programs. Currently, I serve as a Reader at MMCDSR in Ambala, Haryana—a role that allows me to merge my academic passion with hands-on experience. Clinically, I’ve been practicing dentistry for the past 12 years. From routine procedures like scaling and root planing to more advanced cases involving grafts, biopsies, and implant surgeries. Honestly, I still find joy in doing a simple RCT when it’s needed. It’s not just about the procedure but making sure the patient feels comfortable and safe. Academically, I have 26 research publications to my credit. I’m on the editorial boards of the Archives of Dental Research and Journal of Dental Research and Oral Health, and I’ve spent a lot of time reviewing manuscripts—from case reports to meta-analyses and even book reviews. I was honored to receive the “Best Editor” award by Innovative Publications, and Athena Publications recognized me as an “excellent reviewer,” which honestly came as a bit of a surprise! In 2025, I had the opportunity to present a guest lecture in Italy on traumatic oral lesions. Sharing my work and learning from peers globally has been incredibly fulfilling. Outside academics and clinics, I’ve also worked in the pharmaceutical sector as a Drug Safety Associate for about 3 years, focusing on pharmacovigilance. That role really sharpened my attention to detail and deepened my understanding of drug interactions and adverse effects. My goal is to keep learning, and give every patient and student my absolute best.

It’s important to approach this thoughtfully. Creatine is a popular supplement for enhancing athletic performance, and while generally considered safe for adults, its use in adolescents presents a few considerations. At 15, your body is still developing and the long-term effects of creatine use for teenagers haven’t been thoroughly studied. Current research suggests that short-term creatine use is safe for adolescents engaged in structured, competitive sports, but there’s not enough data to draw firm conclusions about safety over long-term use and its impact on a developing body. You’ve mentioned a plan to drink 3 liters of water daily, which is good, as adequate hydration is indeed important when taking creatine to help support kidney function. High-protein diets alone aren’t typically problematic for healthy individuals, but combined with creatine supplementation, the overall impact on the kidneys needs careful consideration, especially if there is any family history of kidney issues. It’s recommended to consult a healthcare provider or a sports dietitian who can consider your individual health status, lifestyle, and specific goals. They can help assess whether your planned regimen is appropriate and safe for you at this stage of your development. In general, ensuring a balanced diet, regular exercise, and proper hydration are foundational for gym performance and overall health.
