What to do if my menstrual cycle is irregular and I have high prolactin levels? - #29975
Hello Doctor, My name is Mayas, I am 29 years old. My weight is 57 kg and my height is 165 cm. About 4 years ago, my menstrual cycle started becoming irregular. Sometimes my period would stop completely or become very delayed. I visited my first doctor, and I was diagnosed with an ovarian cyst. I took medication, my period returned, and things became regular again for about a year. After another year, my period became delayed again, and I was told once more that I had an ovarian cyst. About a year later, or a little less, my period stopped for several months. I visited multiple doctors: One doctor said I had an ovarian cyst. Another said I had polycystic ovaries. A third doctor said my ovaries were weak and not functioning properly. I took hormonal medication to regulate my cycle. One doctor even told me that I would not be able to have children and that I would need to stay on hormone-regulating medication until the age of 45. Later, I visited an endocrinologist. At that time, my weight was only 46 kg. He told me I was underweight and advised me to gain weight. I gained weight and reached 57 kg, and my menstrual cycle became regular again for a long period. Last year, after Ramadan, my period stopped for more than 3 months, and the same problem returned. I was asked to do a prolactin test, and the result was high (43). I took medication for high prolactin, and my condition improved and my cycle became regular again. The doctor told me that my problem was high prolactin and advised me to repeat the test whenever symptoms returned. I also had an AMH (ovarian reserve) test, and the result was 0.1. However, the doctor said this result might not be accurate because at that time my prolactin was high, ovulation had stopped, and my period had been absent for a long time. This year, after Ramadan again, my period stopped. My last period started on March 5 and ended on March 19. I had symptoms similar to high prolactin again, so I took prolactin medication on my own before testing. I felt better and the symptoms improved, but my period still has not returned. One week ago, I repeated the prolactin test, and the result was 21.
