can we eat papaya seeds - #23464

Dhruv

I am really confused about something and hope you guys can help. Lately, I've been doing a lot of reading on health and diets, and I keep hearing about papaya seeds. I stumbled across this claim about how can we eat papaya seeds and the benefits they might provide, like for digestion and even as a natural remedy for other issues. However, I remember my aunt saying that they were toxic or something? I mean, I know people in some cultures eat them, and they seem to swear by it, but then I see conflicting info online. A few days ago, I actually tried some in a smoothie, figuring I’d give it a shot, not realizing there might be some risks. Since then, I’ve been kinda worried. Can we eat papaya seeds safely? Like, what exactly happens to our bodies when we do? I've read that they might help with parasites and even have anti-inflammatory properties. But I can't tell if that’s just an exaggeration! Also, should we be mindful of how many we eat? Does size or preparation method matter? Really hope someone can clarify this cause I just want to be safe while exploring new health foods. Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this dilemma about can we eat papaya seeds!

Doctors' responses

You can eat papaya seeds, though it’s important to approach this with some caution and awareness of potential effects. Papaya seeds have indeed been consumed in certain cultures and are claimed to possess health benefits like improving digestion and having antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory properties. However, these claims are not universally accepted within the scientific community due to limited research on the subject. When consumed in small quantities, papaya seeds are generally considered safe for most people. They contain compounds like papain, which may aid digestion and some potential antimicrobial ingredients. That being said, they also contain benzyl isothiocyanate, a compound that in large amounts has demonstrated toxic effects in experimental studies. So, moderation is key. Eating papaya seeds in large quantities or over a prolonged period isn’t recommended, and it’s especially important to be cautious if you have any allergies related to papaya. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid them due to insufficient research on their safety during these periods. The size and preparation might influence digestion and palatability rather than safety. Crushing the seeds or drying them can make them easier to consume and integrate into dishes like smoothies or salads. If you’ve eaten them in moderate amounts and are feeling fine, it’s likely that there is little cause for concern, but if you experience any stomach upset or unusual symptoms, it’s a good idea to stop consuming them and consult with a healthcare professional if symptoms persist.
