how to stop your height - #24442

Swara

I am really worried because I’ve been feeling obsessed with my height lately. I’m 16 and seem to be one of the shortest ones in my class. A few of my friends are already 6 feet tall, while I’m barely at 5'3". I keep thinking about how to stop your height, which sounds kinda weird, but I just wish I could be taller, you know? My dad was really short too, and I’m starting to freak out, thinking that I won’t grow anymore. The doctors told me that you stop growing at around 18 or something, and I feel like I’m already behind. I’ve read stuff online about things like diets or exercises that can supposedly help your growth, or even ways to somehow stunt it if that makes sense? A friend even jokingly suggested wearing ankle weights, which is kinda silly. I just want to know how to stop your height from being an issue in my life. Seriously, are there any natural ways or something anyone has tried? I’m just feeling lost right now and would love to hear thoughts or experiences from you guys. Thanks!

Doctors' responses

If you’re concerned about your height, it’s important to know that height is largely determined by genetics, and while you’re still 16, you likely have some growing to do. Many people continue to grow up to about 18 for females and possibly into their early 20s for males. So, there’s time yet for you to gain a few more inches. However, there’s not a guaranteed way to increase height aside from ensuring you’re healthy and supporting your body’s growth naturally. Diet can play a role; make sure you’re consuming enough calcium, vitamin D, and protein, which are essential for growth and bone health. Avoid any extreme diets that can harm your overall development. Regular physical activity, including sports like basketball or swimming, can keep you fit and healthy, although they won’t directly make you taller. It’s wise to avoid things that are rumored to stunt growth, such as using ankle weights or other eccentric methods, as they are not supported by evidence and might even cause injury. Managing stress and getting plenty of sleep, around 8-10 hours per night, is crucial since growth hormone, which contributes to height, is primarily secreted during sleep. If you’ve got other medical conditions or concerns about delayed growth, it might be beneficial to talk to a healthcare provider for personalized advice. Try to shift focus from comparison with peers to aspects of health, hobbies, and achievements where you have control and can excel. Ultimately, maintaining good health is what’s most beneficial for your growth—and well-being—right now.
