is pineapple heat for body - #24652

Kimaya

I am not sure what to think about how pineapple affects my body heat. I love eating pineapple, but I’ve heard from some friends that it can be "heat" for the body and might not be great for everyone. Last week, I had this whole tropical-themed dinner, and honestly, I went overboard with the pineapple — in my smoothie, on my pizza, and I even had a pineapple dessert. The next day, I felt a bit off. I mean, I've been sweating more than usual, and my skin feels weirdly hot, like I’m losing my cool!! Is that normal?? I've had some digestive issues too, like an upset stomach and occasional cramps, and I wonder if it’s linked to this "heat" thing. A doc told me before that different foods can affect our body heat differently. But I always thought pineapple was supposed to be refreshing!!! I believe every food impacts each person uniquely, but seriously, is pineapple heat for the body? Should I be concerned? Or maybe I just ate too much? Would love to hear what others think about this heat thing with pineapple!

Doctors' responses

Pineapple itself isn’t scientifically classified as a “heating” food in the context of body temperature. The idea of certain foods being “heating” or “cooling” is more common in traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda or Traditional Chinese Medicine, and doesn’t directly translate to the scientific understanding we use in modern medicine. That said, pineapple is acidic and some people might experience discomfort such as upset stomach or heartburn if they consume it in large amounts. This might explain some of the digestive symptoms you experienced. Given your tropical feast with a lot of pineapple, it’s possible that the acidity and fiber content could have temporarily upset your digestive system. Pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme that can aid digestion but might also cause irritation to the stomach lining when consumed in excess. This could lead to the “hot” sensation you felt. If you’re sensitive to high-acid foods, it might be best to consume pineapple in moderation. As for sweating more, this could be coincidental unless you’re experiencing other symptoms of illness or allergy. Ensure you’re hydrated, since dehydration can mimic signs of overheating. If symptoms persist or if you experience severe symptoms like significant digestive pain, skin reactions, or signs of an allergic reaction (swelling, hives, difficulty breathing), it’s important to seek medical advice promptly. For now, perhaps ease off on the pineapple a bit, observe how your body responds, and maintain a balanced diet with plenty of water. As always, if you notice persistent or worsening symptoms, it’s a good idea to have a doctor take a look to ensure nothing more serious is at play.
