when to take lorazepam for anxiety - #26032

Aarav

I am really confused about when to take lorazepam for anxiety. I started feeling super anxious a few months ago, and it's been really overwhelming. I tried some breathing exercises and meditations but they haven’t helped as much as I hoped. My doctor recommended lorazepam, but he didn't really explain when to take lorazepam for anxiety. Like, do I take it only when I feel an attack coming on, or is it better to take it at certain times to prevent the anxiety? I had this one really tough day last week, felt like my heart was racing and I couldn’t think straight, and I didn't know if I should've taken it then or waited? It feels kind of silly, but I just wanna do what's best and not overdo it either. I read online that lorazepam can be addictive, so I’m just a bit worried about if I take it too often. How do you all manage this? What’s the best way to know when to take lorazepam for anxiety, and can anyone share their experience? Like, is there a specific routine that works? I just hope I can figure this out soon.

When using lorazepam for anxiety, it’s typically recommended to take it as needed, rather than on a strict schedule, unless your healthcare provider has advised otherwise. Lorazepam is often used to manage acute anxiety episodes, meaning it’s taken when the symptoms become particularly intense or overwhelming—like when you’re experiencing a significant anxiety spike or a panic attack. This medication works relatively quickly, usually helping to relieve symptoms within 30 minutes to an hour.

Given your concerns regarding potential dependency, you should use lorazepam sparingly. It’s important to follow your physician’s guidance closely, keeping to the prescribed dosage and frequency. You mentioned using it on a particularly tough day—it’s exactly such scenarios where short-term relief could be beneficial. That heart-racing feeling and inability to think straight you described fits the kind of acute anxiety lorazepam is meant to alleviate. However, it’s crucial to be aware of the signs that you’re taking it too often or relying heavily on it for regular stress or compulsive use, which could lead to dependency issues.

Try to pair lorazepam use with ongoing non-pharmacological strategies that you’re already exploring like cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, or other relaxation techniques. This dual approach can be more effective in managing anxiety without over-reliance on medication. If you continue to have questions or concerns about your lorazepam usage or anxiety management strategies, definitely schedule a follow-up with your doctor to discuss this further. Your provider is the best resource to guide you on how to best tailor the treatment to your specific situation, balancing efficacy with safety.
