Late periods

Rhea

I am freaking out a little bit here, and need some advice. My periods have been super regular for the last year, always showing up like clockwork. But now, I’m dealing with late periods! Seriously, it’s been over a week this time. I mean, I took a pregnancy test like three days ago, and it was negative, but my mind keeps racing. I can’t help but wonder why these late periods are happening, and if it’s something serious. I’ve also been feeling a bit more stressed than usual with work and everything, but I thought stress was supposed to just mess with the timing, not make them late like this. I tried to look up late periods on the internet, and I found a bunch of stuff about hormonal imbalances or even conditions like PCOS, but that sounds kinda scary. Should I wait a little longer to see if it just shows up, or do I need to go check with a doctor about these late periods? It’s just so frustrating not knowing what’s going on with my body! Anyone else deal with this? What should I do next? Also, if you have any tips on how to deal with late periods and the worry that comes with them, that could really help too!

Doctors' responses

When periods are late, especially when they’ve been regular, it can be concerning. Many factors can influence menstrual cycle regularity. Stress, like you mentioned, can indeed affect timing. It’s not unusual for significant stress to delay ovulation, which could lead to a late period. However, there are other considerations too. Hormonal imbalances, like thyroid issues or fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone, might also play a role. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is another possibility, but it commonly presents with additional symptoms like irregular bleeding and acne, so it’s unlikely to be the only cause here just from one late period. In terms of pregnancy, if you’ve tested negative and still worried, consider repeating the test a week after the missed period; it’s more reliable then. If periods stay irregular or you’re having repeated delays, seeing a doctor would be worthwhile — they can provide a thorough evaluation, sometimes including blood tests to check hormone levels, or an ultrasound if necessary. For now, try to maintain a healthy lifestyle, with regular physical activity, balanced diet and stress-reduction techniques such as mindfulness or yoga. Occasionally, periods can just be late with no serious underlying cause especially if they’re back on track next month. If you experience severe pain or unusual bleeding, seek medical help sooner. However, without additional symptoms, waiting another cycle can be reasonable unless your situation changes. Giving yourself calm and informed approach can keep unnecessary stress from compounding the issue.
