What causes severe pain in my left upper leg when I stand up after sitting?

Client_cde08c

When I stand up, I feel severe pain in my left upper leg. After a few minutes imbalanced painful walk, it eases. Just 20 min sitting or lying it starts again. I’m not sure it’s the joint because long ago (maybe a decade) I was hit by a motorbike and my bone around there got fractured. What is it and how to cure? Thanks.

The pain you’re describing in your left upper leg, especially considering your past fracture, could be linked to a few different issues. First, muscular issues such as strain or muscle imbalance around the area are common. When you sit or lie down, your muscles relax, and standing up can cause sudden tension, leading to pain. Another possibility is nerve-related problems. Compression of the sciatic nerve, often from prolonged sitting or awkward positions, could cause sharp pain upon standing, which might ease after walking because movement helps decompress the nerve. Since you mentioned a past fracture, it might be worth considering if there are any long-term effects like osteoarthritis, which can develop near previous injury sites, impacting surrounding tissues or joints, potentially contributing to the pain pattern you describe.

To manage the pain, start with some practical measures. Gentle stretching of your hamstring and quadriceps muscles can might relieve tension. Also, if you spend a lot of time sitting, try to stand and walk every 30 minutes to prevent stiffness and alleviate pressure build-up. Maintain good posture, ensuring your chair offers proper support. Use ice packs for 15 to 20 minutes to help reduce inflammation if the area is swollen, or warm compresses for easing muscle stiffness. Over-the-counter pain relief like ibuprofen could be helpful short-term if you don’t have contraindications. Nevertheless, given your history and current symptoms, it’s essential to consult a physician. They can assess for structural changes through imaging, evaluate nerve function, and explore other diagnoses like referred pain from your lower back. Seek medical attention promptly if the leg pain is severe or accompanied by any neurological symptoms like numbness or weakness, as these could need urgent care.
