Redness, itching, and occasional swelling of the vaginal and vulvar area could be due to various reasons, such as a yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis, contact dermatitis, or an STI. Considering you’ve been dealing with these symptoms for two months, it’s important to narrow down the cause to treat it effectively. A yeast infection is common and can cause redness, itching, and swelling. Over-the-counter antifungal creams like clotrimazole or miconazole might help if this is the case, but it’s crucial first to confirm the diagnosis. Bacterial infections like bacterial vaginosis can require antibiotics, which need a prescription from a doctor. Avoid scratching or rubbing the area, as this can worsen irritation and swelling. Wearing looser, cotton underwear and avoiding scented products can also reduce irritation. It’s also wise to refrain from washing the area with harsh soaps that might disturb the natural balance of the vaginal flora. Given the duration of your symptoms, a visit to a healthcare provider for a proper examination and possible testing is advisable. This is especially necessary to ensure there’s no underlying condition that would need a specific treatment. In the meantime, keeping the area clean and dry and monitoring symptoms closely can be beneficial. If there’s an increase in discomfort or new symptoms develop, make sure to seek medical attention promptly.
