gond katira is hot or cold - #22632

Raj

I am really confused about whether gond katira is hot or cold for the body. A few days ago, I tried a dish that had gond katira in it, and I loved it! But then a friend was like, "Oh, but you know, it's hot for your body." I didn't really get what that meant, and I've been looking up stuff, but the info is all over the place. I tend to have a sensitive stomach, and I remember having these digestive issues after eating it last summer. I thought maybe that's why! So now I wonder, is gond katira is hot or cold for real? My mom always says certain foods can either cool you down or heat you up, and I think this might be one of those things. But then again, I’ve read that it actually helps with stuff like digestion and hydration, so how does that fit in? I don't know if I should avoid it altogether or if it's okay to have sometimes. Like, can it be both hot and cold, depending on other ingredients or how it’s prepared? Or am I just overthinking it? If someone can clear this up for me, that would be super helpful!

Doctors' responses

Gond katira, also known as tragacanth gum, is generally considered to be ‘cooling’ for the body in traditional uses. This perspective comes from historical and cultural understandings, like Ayurvedic and Unani traditions, where some ingredients are categorized to have heating or cooling effects on the body. It’s believed to help in hydrating and soothing the body, particularly during hot weather, which aligns with its reputation as a cooling agent. As for your digestive issues, it might not be directly related to gond katira’s inherent qualities. Sometimes, it’s possible that an individual’s reaction to a food substance may vary, based on personal sensitivity, serving size, or even the combination of other ingredients in a dish. If you have a sensitive stomach, it’s useful to monitor how you respond to foods over multiple instances to gauge their impact. Since gond katira can expand and form a gel in the digestive tract, it might lead to bloating or gas in some cases, especially if consumed in large amounts or if your body’s not used to it. So, it’s worthwhile to try consuming it in small quantities and observe how your body responds. Since you’ve noticed digestive issues previously, it might help to test it out cautiously. On the other hand, it’s good practice to maintain a dietary balance and pair it wisely with other foods that tend to support digestive health, like probiotics or fermented foods. If persistent discomfort arises, seeking advice from a healthcare professional would be a beneficial step.
