is stevia better than sugar - #22733

Rohan

I am really confused about something I read recently. About a month ago, I decided to switch to stevia because I heard a lot of people saying that is stevia better than sugar for health, especially when it comes to weight loss and blood sugar levels. I have this sweet tooth, like I can’t resist desserts and sodas! I used to use regular sugar, but my doctor said I should be careful due to my family history of diabetes, ya know? So then, after switching to stevia, I thought I was doing great, but I'm not sure if it's really good for me or just hype. Sometimes I wonder, is stevia better than sugar for real? I mean, my cravings for sweet stuff still hit me like a truck, and I find myself wondering if I'm just trading one problem for another. Like, does stevia affect my body differently? I read mixed stuff online, some say it's natural and some totally against it claiming stevia has weird side effects. Just in the past week, I ended up buying some cookies that have stevia, but they’re still not as satisfying as the ones with sugar. I'm even back to checking ingredients constantly, which is kinda exhausting. Can anyone help me figure out if is stevia better than sugar or is it just one of those trends that’ll go away? I need to know before I make any more changes to my diet!

Switching to stevia from sugar can indeed have several health benefits, particularly if you’re mindful of your calorie intake and concerned about maintaining your blood sugar levels. Stevia is a low-calorie sweetener derived from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant, and it doesn’t raise blood sugar levels because it’s a non-nutritive sweetener, meaning it has little or no calories. This makes it a popular choice for people looking to manage their weight or reduce their caloric intake. In terms of how it affects the body differently compared to sugar, the primary advantage is that it won’t cause the spikes in blood glucose that sugar typically does, which is crucial for people with a history of or risk for diabetes. You mentioned concerns about sweet cravings and satisfaction – it’s not uncommon for people to initially find that products sweetened with stevia might not fully satisfy their sweet tooth the way sugar does. This is because the taste of stevia can be different and might take a bit of getting used to, and some people notice a slightly bitter aftertaste with certain stevia products. Regarding side effects, stevia is generally considered safe for most people, but a few might experience mild side effects, like bloating or nausea, especially if consuming large quantities. It’s important to pay attention to how your body reacts. If you find that something doesn’t sit well or impacts you negatively, it may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider. It’s also worth noting that while stevia may help in managing your calorie consumption, replacing every sugar-sweet treat with lower-calorie alternatives won’t automatically result in drastic weight loss or health improvement without a broader balanced diet and lifestyle changes such as regular physical activity. If you’re feeling particularly overwhelmed by constant ingredient checks or dissatisfaction with products you’re purchasing, it could help to work with a nutritionist or dietitian who can offer personalized guidance and help ensure your dietary choices align with your health goals while keeping your sweet tooth in check.
