benifits of curd - #27140

Aadhya

I am really curious about the benifits of curd, and I kinda feel like I need some advice. I started eating curd every day after my friend told me how great it was for digestion. You know, I’ve been struggling with bloating and uncomfortable stomach pains for a couple of months now, and nothing seemed to help. One day, I saw her whip out a big bowl of curd as an evening snack, and she went on and on about the benifits of curd, like how it’s packed with probiotics and good for the gut. It got me thinking! I’ve tried changing my diet and drinking more water, but really, nothing has worked as well as this. So, I’ve been munching on it with some fruits every afternoon for about two weeks. Honestly, I've noticed some little changes but I’m not sure its the curd or just coincidence. I mean, my bloating feels a bit better, and my skin seems brighter? But I wonder if that's really true, like do the benifits of curd actually include clearer skin and better tummy health? Can eating too much curd do any harm? Should I be worried if, say, I combine it with too many sweet things or do too many servings a day? Just wanna make sure I’m on the right track here!

Doctors' responses

Curd, often referred to as yogurt, does indeed have several health benefits, especially when it comes to digestion. It’s rich in probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that can help maintain a healthy balance in your gut microbiome. This can lead to improved digestion, reduced bloating, and might even help with some forms of constipation or diarrhea. A healthy gut can, in turn, enhance nutrient absorption, and indirectly this might help with skin health, potentially explaining the brighter complexion you’ve noticed. However, while curd can contribute positively to digestive health, it’s important to consider the overall balance in your diet. Eating too much of anything, including curd, could potentially lead to imbalances or unintended side effects. For instance, consuming too much curd might contribute to excess calorie intake, and if it’s flavored or has added sugars, it might lead to weight gain or glucose spikes. It’s generally safe to have one to two servings of curd per day, depending on your dietary needs and caloric requirements. If you notice any adverse symptoms like increased bloating, gas, or discomfort, consider reducing your intake or choosing plain varieties to avoid added sugars. Pairing curd with fruits is generally a healthy choice, but moderation is key. If you’re adding sweeteners or having it with particularly sugary foods, it’s better to keep an eye on your daily sugar intake. Additionally, some individuals with lactose intolerance may experience discomfort, though yogurt is often better tolerated than milk due to its probiotic content. If symptoms like stomach pain persist despite changes in diet, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying conditions. Remember, while curd can be a beneficial part of your diet, it’s only one component of a healthy lifestyle. Balancing it with a variety of other nutrient-rich foods, sufficient hydration, and regular physical activity will contribute to overall health and wellbeing.
