raisin water benefits and side effects - #27979

Manvi

I am kinda in a pickle here. A friend of mine was raving about the raisin water benefits last week, said it's like a miracle drink for digestion and energy or something. So, stupid me, I decided to give it a try. I soaked some raisins in water overnight, then drank the stuff the next morning. At first, I thought it tasted kinda weird but was okay with it. But then the second day, I felt a bit nauseous? Like not full-on throw-up sick, but, y'know, just not right. I did some googling and found all these raisin water benefits but also kinda vague mention of side effects. Now, I’m confused! Should I continue drinking it or is there a chance the raisin water benefits are outweighed by these side effects? Some people say it helps with hydration and even glowing skin, which sounds amazing, but what if I don’t do well with it? Are the raisin water benefits worth the risk of feeling sick? Anyone else experience something similar? I really wanna know if others have had good or bad experiences with raisin water too. Am I alone in feeling this way? !

Doctors' responses

Raisin water has created a bit of excitement as a natural remedy due to its purported health benefits like aiding digestion, improving hydration, and, as you’ve mentioned, even giving the skin a glow. These potential benefits largely come from the nutrients found in raisins, like iron, potassium, and vitamins. Raisin water is thought to be more easily absorbed since it’s in liquid form, helping the body to utilize these nutrients efficiently. However, feeling nauseous could indicate that your body isn’t agreeing with it, maybe due to individual sensitivities or the sudden introduction of a new substance into your diet. It’s possible that the fructose content in raisins, which gets released into the water, may be a contributing factor for some people experiencing discomfort, as it can sometimes ferment in the gut leading to gas and mild gut distress.

Moreover, there may be other reasons unrelated to the drink itself, such as your overall diet, hydration levels, or even a mild stomach bug coincidentally overlapping with its consumption. If the nausea persists with continued use, it’s wise to discontinue drinking the raisin water and observe if your symptoms improve. Every individual’s system reacts differently, and what’s beneficial for one might not be the same for another. Often, users might not experience any side effects at all, while others may find it disagrees with them.

If you are otherwise healthy, it might just be unnecessary for you to rely on such beverages, especially if it causes discomfort. Should you choose to continue experimenting with it, consider reducing the quantity or frequency to see if it feels any better. Listen to your body’s cues, and if the nausea worsens or other symptoms crop up, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional for more tailored advice, potentially ruling out any underlying issues. Keeping a food diary may also help identify if raisin water or another dietary component may be contributing to your symptoms.
