what are the most common side effects of lorazepam

Kashvi

I am trying to understand what are the most common side effects of lorazepam because I just started taking it last week for anxiety, and honestly, it feels like a bit of a rollercoaster. Like, the first night was kind of nice; I had this weird calmness wash over me, but then the next day I was totally groggy and felt like a zombie. It’s been a struggle to focus on work, and I even missed a meeting because I just didn’t remember! My doctor said that lorazepam is supposed to help, but what are the most common side effects of lorazepam that I should be looking out for? I’ve also noticed a bit of dizziness when I get up too fast or when I bend over, which feels a little alarming. And sometimes I feel a little detached, like I’m not fully “here,” which freaks me out more than I expected. I just want to rule out if I'm overreacting or if they're normal reactions or even if I'm taking it wrong or something? Any thoughts on what are the most common side effects of lorazepam? Thanks a bunch for any insights!

Doctors' responses

Lorazepam, while effective for anxiety, can indeed lead to several side effects, some of which you’re already experiencing. The most common ones include sedation or drowsiness, which can explain the groggy, zombie-like feeling you’re having. It’s a result of the medication’s calming effects on your central nervous system. Memory issues and difficulty concentrating are also known side effects, and these could be responsible for that missed meeting. These cognitive effects tend to be more pronounced when you first start the medication or if the dose is increased. Lightheadedness or dizziness, especially when changing positions quickly, is also not uncommon and stems from the medication’s influence on blood pressure and balance. As for that sensation of detachment or feeling not fully ‘here,’ this can be part of the sedative effects—sometimes referred to as feeling disconnected or ‘out of it’—and it’s generally a result of how lorazepam alters brain function to reduce anxiety.

Now, it’s important to be aware that these side effects can diminish over time as your body adjusts to the medication, but if they’re significantly impacting your daily life, it might be worth discussing with your doctor to consider a dosage adjustment or even an alternative treatment. Ensure you’re using the medication only as prescribed, typically short-term, to avoid issues related to dependence or tolerance. Always take it at the same time each day and be cautious about combining it with other central nervous system depressants like alcohol. If side effects are severe or don’t seem to improve, it’s crucial to speak to your healthcare provider promptly. Safety should always be your top priority, particularly if these effects are interfering with your ability to function normally in your daily activities.
