Anxiety

Advait

I am feeling really overwhelmed and need some advice about my anxiety. Just a few months ago, everything was fine, right? But ever since I started a new job, my anxiety has become unbearable. Like, I can't sleep at night because my mind just races with thoughts about work and what-if scenarios. I’ve tried deep breathing, and I even joined a yoga class, but nothing seems to work long-term. Last week, I had this panic attack out of nowhere in the middle of a meeting, which made it worse. I talked to my doctor, and they suggested medication for anxiety, but I’m really hesitant! What if it makes me feel worse or changes who I am? I’ve read mixed stuff online. Some say meds help, others warn about side effects. How do people even decide? And, like, what's the deal with therapy? Is it worth it? I really want to learn how to manage my anxiety naturally, but I don’t know where to start! Are there any all-natural methods that work? Really hope to hear some thoughts on this!

Doctors' responses

When anxiety becomes overwhelming, especially after a change like starting a new job, it’s helpful to approach it from multiple angles. Let’s start with medication: concerns about side effects are valid. Some people find that anti-anxiety medication helps relieve symptoms quickly, while others experience adverse effects. It’s important to discuss potential side effects and what to expect with your doctor. They can guide you on starting a low dose to monitor how it affects you. Keep in mind, not everyone has severe side effects, and some symptoms may diminish over time. Importantly, medication can be a short-term aid to complement other treatments. Now, regarding therapy: cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a widely recommended non-pharmacological treatment, and many find it effective. CBT focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors. It’s worth exploring as it can provide long-lasting strategies to manage anxiety. Therapy also gives you a safe space to explore the root causes of your feelings, which can be empowering. For natural methods, beyond yoga and deep breathing, consider mindfulness meditation, which has strong evidence for reducing anxiety. Apps like Headspace or Calm can help guide you initially. Regular physical activity also releases endorphins, which naturally reduce stress. A consistent sleep schedule and dietary changes, such as reducing caffeine, might also help. Lastly, limit your exposure to stressful stimuli, like continuous work-related emails after hours. Everyone’s response to treatment and lifestyle changes varies, so be patient in finding what works best for you, and discussions with a healthcare provider can help tailor these interventions to your situation and comfort level.
