how much 5htp should i take - #26775
I am really confused about how much 5htp should i take. I started taking it a few weeks ago because I’ve been feeling kinda low and anxious. A friend of mine said it really helped her with her mood and sleep, so I thought I'd give it a try. I've started with 50mg once a day, but after a few days, I began to worry if that was enough or too much, or like, what's the right dosage? I read some stuff online where people say 100 mg or even more, but I don’t know if that’s safe. Some days, I feel a tiny bit better, but other days, I just feel the same. And then, there’s this thing that I read about side effects if you take too much—that freaked me out. I do have moments where I feel a little jittery or even a little nauseous after taking it. It’s hard to think clearly when I’m worried about this kind of thing. Should I stick with 50mg? How much 5htp should i take if it’s supposed to help? Are there any signs I should look for that would tell me I need to adjust my dose? I just want to feel like myself again, you know?

Doctors' responses
When it comes to taking 5-HTP, the optimal dose can vary based on individual needs and reactions, but starting with 50 mg per day is a common and cautious approach many start with. You’ve done the right thing by starting at a lower dose to see how your body responds. Generally, the dosage for 5-HTP can range from 50 to 300 mg daily, depending on the intended use, whether it’s for mood or sleep or other health concerns. However, it’s essential to increase the dosage gradually and under the guidance of a healthcare professional to monitor for any side effects or interactions, especially if one experiences symptoms like jitteriness or nausea. These could be signals that your body isn’t tolerating the dose well or that a dose adjustment might be necessary.
Importantly, you should be aware of potential interactions if you’re taking other medications—particularly antidepressants, as combining 5-HTP with these can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome, a serious condition. If you decide to change your dose, do it slowly. Always monitor your body’s responses and make adjustments in small increments, like increasing by 25-50 mg, allowing a few days between each change for you to assess your reaction.
If you continue to feel concerned or experience side effects, it’s best to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide guidance tailored to your specific health situation. Remember that while supplements can be helpful, they should be approached with caution and respect for their potent effects on the body. Paying attention to how you’re feeling day-to-day and keeping track of any changes or symptoms will be helpful information if and when you discuss it with a doctor.
