what is sabja called in english - #22628

Aadhyant

I am really confused about this sabja thing. I started this new health kick and someone told me I should be adding sabja seeds to my smoothies. So, I figured I'd try it, but then I realized I had no idea what is sabja called in english? I went to the store and asked the clerk, but I just got a blank stare. I’ve heard it’s like basil seeds or something like that, but that didn’t help much either. Last week, I bought a pack labeled “sweet basil seeds” but I just wasn’t sure if that was the same thing. Been adding them to my drinks and they feel kinda slimy but in a good way? I just don’t know if they’re doing anything or if I’m wasting my time with sabja. I read somewhere that they might be good for digestion but I’m kinda skeptical. I mean, is there a right way to use sabja seeds? What if I’m just making everything worse? If I google “what is sabja called in english,” all I get are mixed answers. Like, who knew this would be so complicated? Please help me! What should I really be looking for when it comes to sabja?

Doctors' responses

Sabja seeds are indeed known as basil seeds in english, specifically the seeds of Ocimum basilicum, which is sweet basil. You were right in picking up that pack labeled “sweet basil seeds,” as they’re essentially the same thing as sabja. These seeds have been used traditionally, particularly in various Asian cuisines and Ayurvedic practices, for their potential health benefits. Yes, when soaked in water, they develop a gelatinous outer layer, giving that slimy texture you described. This transformation is actually what makes them appealing in beverages as they can add a unique texture and also potentially aid digestion by working as a natural laxative, which can help with constipation in some individuals. While they’re touted for aiding weight loss, reducing blood sugar levels, and improving overall digestion, the scientific evidence behind these claims is not robust. However, they are generally considered safe to consume in moderation as part of a healthy diet. To use them effectively, soak a teaspoon of these seeds in a glass of water for about 30 minutes until they swell up, then they can be added to drinks like smoothies, lemonades, or soups. It’s important to consume them with plenty of fluid since their ability to absorb liquid can lead to choking if not hydrated enough before swallowing. If you experience any discomfort, digestive upset, or unexpected symptoms, consider reducing the amount you’re using or pausing their consumption. It’s always a good idea to evaluate how your body responds to any new dietary addition and consult a healthcare professional if in doubt, particularly if you have pre-existing dietary issues or allergies.
